With a sister unable to dissuade the unwanted advances of Constable Fitzpatrick, Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart soon find themselves labeled "an outlaw gang" by the less-than-honorable constable. It's a designation they're apt to live up to after Ned's mother is unfairly arrested and sentenced to three years hard labor. In retaliation, the Kelly Gang strikes out against the oppressive Victorian government, with ultimately tragic results and passage into Australian folklore. Sorry, but I had to rate this film very low, primarily because I could not understand the Irish/Australian accents. I caught maybe one word out of five or six and was therefore unable to make sense of most of what was said. And, unfortunately, the DVD subtitles did not work -- first time I have encountered this problem with any DVD over the years! The movie seems to have been shot with the camera's aperture closed down a couple of stops, for it was very dark. I had to set picture quality to VIVID and turn up the brightness to obtain a decent picture. Even then many scenes were ridiculously dark. And there's nothing wrong with my equipment, have been watching many movies the last few weeks. Overall, the pace of Ned Kelly was slow and plodding, with long, long lingering shots that were not necessary, that added nothing, but rather simply occupied time. I was looking forward greatly to this title, and feel terribly let down. I didn't know what to expect from 'Ned Kelly', but absolutely loved it. It was dark, dramatic and gripping. It also felt very authentic, I felt that I had been transported back to the 1800's. I've never been much of a Heath Ledger fan, having only seen him in teen type movies, however he is quite compelling in this role. Ledger plays Ned Kelly with dignity and intensity, showing us how an highly spirited boy became Australia's most notorious killer. Naomi Watts is great in a supporting role as Kelly's society lover. Highly recommended - and that's from an Aussie!
