I have acquired what appears to be a little used Mercury 9.8 - Answered by a verified Marine Mechanic. Whereas the inside of the sleeve guide above the water pump is approx. 1 3/4" above the flange of the bottom . The tube does not slide as there would be no way to get your hand in there, its made to a specific length.
