The Magnificent Bahman Beigi: The Story of Tribal Education in Modern Iran
by Mohammad Bahman Beigi

Every now and then the folks who recently had come across his name and life achievements would ask me about the motive behind Bahman Beigi’s success and I always had some stereotype answers to save the moment until the day not long ago when I pondered about the same question and in my daydream I recalled him speaking frequently on the matter in his inexplicable way: " Madness, I have no other explanation for what I did; It was madness." Sometimes he went further sparing some mercy on his children including myself who had achieved little and redeemed us in front of the people who would come to see him in his house: "..., but I got lucky. They say god has another signature for his works, luck. I got lucky." His own people say ultimately historians will divide the Iranian Tribal life into two different periods: The Iranian Tribal Life before and after Bahman Beigi. Being with him as his son for nearly forty years I had walked out and fled to the West with my wife and son, only to find myself the subject of years of unrequited toil following my university graduation back in Iran and further immigration first to Dubai and next to London, I finally came to realize that I had a knack to follow his footsteps. Maybe a little too late for he was gone and I had to work as a Doctor after twenty four years starting from the medical school in Iran and roughing it through nearly seven years of hard work as an overseas orthopedic doctor for the NHS. So I decided to translate and assemble Bahman Beigi's life story into English in order to console that tormenting inner tribal voice within and quench the ancient fire that had no place in the sole of a present day doctor. This therefore is the life story of that “Lucky Grand Nomad" written by himself and distributed as a collection of short stories through four published works in Farsi. Miss Sandra More has ably rendered my translations into the current English idiom.
