Welcome to Te Whariki online. This site offers information, resources, and support for early childhood teachers, educators, and kaiako working with Te Whariki, the early learning curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Whariki includes two documents in one flipbook: Te Whariki: He whariki matauranga mo nga mokopuna
The curriculum is founded on the following aspirations for children “to grow up as confident and competent learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body, and spirit, secure in the sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society." (Te Whariki, 1996,. Ministry of Education).
Te Whariki is for young children and is not like a school curriculum. It does not prescribe formal subject teaching. It is a curriculum guideline originally published in 1996 and revised in 2017 by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. It outlines the curriculum that the Ministry of Education requires every early childhood
The programme will provide activities to meet the specified objectives, and the equipment necessary to promote independence. Te Whariki is designed to be inclusive and appropriate for all children and anticipates that special needs will be met as children learn together in all kinds of early childhood education settings.
