A Mad Max-esque post apocalyptic world provides the backdrop for a brutal, futuristic game resembling football. Rutger Hauer plays a disgraced former star leading a rag tag group of "Juggers" to one of the remaining Nine Cities for glory and redemption
(This does not really contain plot spoilers; however, because I am describing the nature of the characters it could be considered a spoiler because it may indicate the general direction of the plot).
This is a B movie because it does not seem to be that well known but some of the actors are fairly well established. As long as you are aware of what you are going to get (in terms of film type) then this is a really satisfying film.
When it first started off it seemed to have a rather tacky feeling to it. It picked up soon enough and after a while I really started empathizing with the characters. None of them appear to be strong as individuals but this adds to the sense of them being the underdogs (that is vaguely a spoiler). The acting is not amazingly expressive but the economy of the acting seems to give a sense of depth to each character. The main characters are tough and dangerous but also vulnerable and scared, like people who have endured a harsh and painful life.
The ambient nature of the setting gives a sense of depression and hardship but there is a subtle undercurrent of humanity. Even though life is rough and dangerous, people still seem to have an obscure kind of respect for each other. This comes across as realistic to me. Too many dystopian type films seem to focus on people's complete lack of regard for human life. People are nasty to each other in this film but they still seem to have that vital spark of humanity. It is hard to describe but I believe that it has to be seen to be understood.
It is not unnecessarily violent but I could almost feel the pain and discomfort due to the clever camera work. Enough gritty action is shown without the need for explicit scenes of gut churning violence.
The steady pace that the film goes at could maybe be seen as boring but to me it just went at a perfect rate. The story is simple but the economic plot shows enough human interaction to provide a meaningful story. The film is more concerned with mood and ambiance than complex story-lines.
I really enjoyed it but I could imagine some people wanting more complexity. I was going to give it 9 but only because I could imagine certain people wanting more. I guess beauty is in the eye of the holder and for that reason I give it 10.
What ever happened to Rutger Hauer?
It might not be a question haunting you, but it bothers me.
There he was, carving a valuable niche in the movie world. Emotionally void but possessed of a powerful sneer and radiating a fair dose of physical presence. We loved him in Bladerunner. We accepted him in Split Second. We scorned him in Omega Doom. We even laughed along in Deadlock. But for me he was truly at his best in The Blood of Heroes or Salute of the Jugger as I know and love it.
He leads a motley crew of players and hangers-on through a post-apocalyptic world to compete in a fierce game that's like a cross between gridiron and wrestling. Rutger is a bit shallow, sarcastic and viscous, much like the film as a whole.
The game sequences are well choreographed in their elegant brutality. Along the way to the finale in an underground redoubt populated by the last cultured' humans, we're actually treated to some surprisingly non-cliche character development. Instead of being a demographically and politically correct cross-section of the population, you can see facets of real people you know in the characters. My personal favorite is the guy who carries a big wardrobe in his back the whole movie.
The premise for the film is grand but its overall rendition is more small-scale. You can imagine what could have been done with a bigger budget in almost every scene, which can make the film feel a bit small' at times. Small sets, small bands of extras filling out shots, small stabs of music.
Ultimately, though, you feel the hard core that sits at this films heart, and that's what it's all about. Grab this rough diamond and slam some Rutger between your eyes.
Oh, and in answer to my original question, what ever happened to Rutger Hauer? The last time I saw him was a 2001 music video for Australian songster Kylie Minogue. Oh how the mighty have fallen
The US R-Rated Version misses out nearly 12 minutes of plot sequences that are featured on the European Version of the movie. Additionally an alternate ending can be found in the European Version as well. 646f9e108c
