In spite of loving Stargate SG-1 and the original film, and being excited about the great premise of this series, it always struck me as kind of disposable. I could never really buy into genuine drama, even the sort appropriate for a suspended-belief science fiction show. It amazes me that some consider Atlantis superior to SG-1. Of course the latter was famous for not taking itself too seriously, but it had a winking, tongue in cheek sort of humor that managed to not take away from its moments of seriousness. Atlantis lacked that same quality (although not for complete lack of effort), while to me at least, being rather more cartoonish in characterizations and aesthetics. I read another review in which someone referenced Atlantis being compared to Star Trek Voyager. While the two shows certainly had their differences, I have to say that I felt a similarity in the sense that I ultimately could not take Voyager seriously, the same being the case with Atlantis. In terms of specifics, the cast/characters were a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed Dr. McKay and even adored Elizabeth Weir, but Shepherd was nearly insufferable from the word go with his cheap Jack O'Neill shtick, and "Teyla" was a mystifying combination of self-serious demeanor pasted on an outdated 1990s Xena look that just did not jive with any sort of realism, particularly for an alien character. The villainous Wraith, while very frightening and indeed compelling in theory, were also hard for me to buy when stalking around in what looked like leather jackets and long rockstar hair. Also, the city of Atlantis itself really did not look very exotic. Anyway, on the whole, this series just never hooked me, despite my repeated attempts to watch a few episodes. It is only my humble opinion, but I definitely do not consider Atlantis to be as good as SG-1. It is not a bad show per se, but not great. Stargate Universe later took things in the opposite direction, with a bit more success I would say. Fun, adventure, suspense, comic lines and lively scripts—and the two main merits—a more than likable cast, and competitive effects. It's a nice and fanciful show. There's always a sexy side to this show—beginning with the appealing actresses. Stargate A is a very unusual Sci—Fi series—more intelligent, original and larger in scope than most of the others . Funny scenes, well written, with good actors—and then suspenseful action scenes, and quite impressive effects—that's much more than most of the Sci—Fi shows usually can offer.
