When the publisher of "The Daily Sentinel" dies, his son Britt Reid inherits his newspaper. The idle Britt is a playboy that parties all the time with women and hates his father but he is forced to become the new publisher. He also meets his father's mechanic Kato, who is a skilled fighter of kung fu, and they decide to fight crime for fun wearing masks. Britt uses "The Daily Sentinel" to promote "The Green Hornet" and his sidekick, attracting the attention of the kingpin Chudnofsky, Now the Green Hornet is chased not only by the police, but also by Chudnofsky that is hunting him down.
When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head.
First of all, The Green Hornet was a show that I grew up with when it was screened on TV, so it was nice to see it hitting the big screen to play to a newer generation audience.
That TV series itself was adapted from the radio serials created by George Trendle (who also created The Lone Ranger, to whom the Hornet is supposedly distantly related).
If nothing else, the TV series launched Bruce Lee and his martial arts practices to an unsuspecting world.
The movie made some right gestures toward acknowledging the TV series by having the image of Bruce Lee popping up on Kato's sketch pad when he meets Britt Reid for the first time. The closing sequence where Britt Reid is shot by Kato in pubic to disguise a wound suffered while battling the baddies the previous night also took a leaf out of an episode from the TV series where a similar situation was portrayed. Sadly, Van Williams, the only surviving cast member, did not make a cameo appearance.
Whether he refrained from doing so out of indifference towards show business or if he saw the plot of this movie as not being worthy remains unknown.
Where the movie strays off course somewhat is in the killing off of DA Frank Scanlon, who in previous incarnations of The Hornet, was one of only two persons who knew of The Hornet's alter ego (the other being Lenore Case, Britt Reid's secretary).
I realise that every rendition of a character should be interpreted by the player acting the role, but somehow, Seth Rogen's portrayal of Britt Reid was a little OTT and also at times, uneven, for my liking. In some scenes, he came across as boorish, obnoxious and overbearing, yet in others that were closely juxtaposed, he was caring and concerned.
Jay Chou is a self-confessed Bruce Lee fan and some would say that his delivery was as deadpan as the late, great Bruce's, while the fight sequences were nowhere as stunning as in the TV series. To be fair to Mr Chou, not many can come close to Bruce, let alone surpass h

Coupled to the several continuity and plot errors already highlighted, this movie rendition came across as OK, but not great. A shame really, as with a little more tweaking, it could have been more likable.

Finally, here's one more for the boo boo list - during the final clash scenes at the offices of The Daily Sentinel, The Hornet's ride, The Black Beauty is slice in half, yet continues to drive on owing to Kato stating that it had front wheel drive. Being a modified Chrysler Imperial (as was the George Barris custom used in the TV shows), there would be no way even a claimed engineering supremo like Kato would have been able to convert a classic rear wheel driven chassis to this in the time he had!

Perhaps that was another challenge for The Green Hornet (as the opening line to the introductory narrative for the TV show went each week).
I don't get it. I'm not actually sure what this film is trying to be. Is it a superhero spoof? A buddy comedy? A serious adaptation of the radio series? Well, whatever it is it's entertaining as hell! I wasn't expecting a Marvel standard superhero flick, I just wanted stupidity onscreen. I got that and then some. The son of a recently deceased newspaper publisher teams up with his mechanic, and skilled martial artist, to fight crime and garner headlines for his own newspaper. Look, this film isn't particularly well thought out and reeks of mediocrity. An underdeveloped antagonist (wasting Waltz's talent and time), uninspired superhero story, weird 3D visual effects, extremely bloated runtime and a generally unfunny script. You can tell Gondry had past directing experience with music videos, some of these fights scenes looked like they came straight out of a Darude's 'Sandstorm'. Diaz was just unusual casting and added nothing to her character, whilst Wilkinson deserved better. Yet, unbeknownst to me, I started to succumb to the idiocy. The pointless numbing action had invaded my hypothalamus and I genuinely started to like this film. Rogen and Chou's chemistry may not have been electric but they clearly had a fun time with the self-awareness that the film prevails in. I don't think it takes itself too seriously, reason being is that no blockbuster would reinvent their villain from Chudnofsky to Bloodnofsky. Na-uh, no way. The third act was a treat for the eyes as, and I kid you not, half of a car drives haphazardly on the tenth floor of an office building shooting a barrage of missiles at the enemy as they spray bullets in every direction. You can't even make this up, crazily entertaining! The excessive gadgetry on the "Black Beauty" was reminiscent of 'Batman' to which takes the "Batmobile" and injects it with ridiculousness. I appreciate the utilisation of practical effects, even amidst the noticeable green screen. I just...started to weirdly fall in love with this mediocre flick as it ploughed through its 118 minutes of absurdity.
In a last-minute tweak, the production has also been meaninglessly 3-D-ified - never mind that there's nothing whatsoever 3-D-ish going on. Maybe those clumsy 3-D glasses are meant to let moviegoers mimic the superhero mask-wearing experience?
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones. a5c7b9f00b
