In psychedelic swinging 60s style, the dreaded thief (and killer) Diabolik wreaks havoc on a generic European country for his own financial gain and amusement. He shares an extravagant underground lair (and a giant bed of money) with his curvaceous, superficial girlfriend...who uses her awesome powers of wig-wearing to help Diabolik kill innocent people and steal billions from the government. Nonetheless, Diabolik is the "hero" of the film because he must face off against bumbling cops and revenge-seeking mafiosos.
In a generic European country of the late 60's, Diabolik is an anti-hero whose life consists on preparing schemes to steal government money and make a fool of the entire police department. Helped by his gorgeous girlfriend Eva, Diabolik begins by stealing a few dollars, but his duel of wit and audacity with police inspector Ginko will take them both to some extreme consequences. Based on the Italian comic books by sisters Angela and Luciana Giussani.
What a lousy movie. I knew the second the "artsy" credits started that I was in for a real stinker, but I never imagined how much I would hate this movie. I don't konw what they were trying for, but Diabolik is easily the least likeable protagonist I've ever seen in a movie. He blows Mae West's "Sextette" character (though Sextette was easily a more painful movie) out of the water in sheer annoyingness and unlikeability. I spent the entire movie wondering why we were supposed to cheer for/like Diabolik? He has no redeeming qualities at all, nor is he inherently likeable enough to be a good anti-hero. In fact he really didn't have any characteristics besides greedy, annoying, cocky, and a lover of unitards. The ending where he blinks at the stupid annoying woman out from under his shell of gold p**sed me off to. At least if you think about it logically he'll suffer a fate worse then death, left to slowly starve to death in his shell. Hmmm... actually I think the end of the movie just became a lot more likeable...
Maybe I'm being a tad harsh, I really shouldn't ahve expected anything good from a French-Italian co-production from the 60's. Actually I can't think of any good Italian movies from the 60's that weren't directed by Sergio Leonne.
I gave this movie a resounding 1, but it will always hold a place in my heart as the last MST3K episode.
Imagine standing on the dock of a seaport in some unnamed European country, minding your own business when a man in skin tight black leather and a full face mask runs out of the shadows and kills you just because you stand between him and 20 tons of gold. That's just one of the crazy things that happens in this classic stinker from director Mario Bava. Don't get me wrong - this movie is AWFUL! BUT..I would recommend this movie in a heartbeat as one of the best examples of the spy craze gone nuts. What fun!! I can see this one being remade by the Hollywood id-cons with Steven Segal in the lead.
John Phillip Law is as bad as ever with that trademark stilletto chin of his as the super thief known only as Diabolik. A thief who, when not enjoying a good impossible theft, loves making love to his assistant on piles of money. He manages to pull off one heist after another, much to the dismay of what has to be the worst and most trusting police force in the world. Just when you think they got him...
The bonus is one of the funkiest soundtracks ever to grace a "cool" Italian action pic of the 60's. I was truly captivated by this one.
