A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
In the future the planet will be invaded by aliens who implant themselves into human bodies. You can tell when someone is an alien because they have some weird shiny blue eyes. You always can tell who the villain is in Hollywood productions by their blue eyes and blonde hair. As a result of the alien invasion there is no war, no crime, everyone is respectful, attentive and doesn't lie. But of course there is a small human resistance.
A girl, Melanie, is captured by some stiff people dressed in white. They implant an alien soul in her but she is one of those cases where her soul resist the implantation and tries to control her body and influence the thoughts of the alien soul. She goes through a debrief where the main alien, called Seeker, is trying to obtain information about her human memories and any possible resistance members.
Melanie convinces her alien occupant to escape to the desert and join up with her boyfriend and brother. She nearly dies but is found by the resistance who recognize that she's an alien but the leader hopes that somewhere in there Melanie still lives. Meanwhile the Seeker and others try find Melanie and any other humans.
Melanie returns to her brother and her boyfriend, meanwhile her alien soul falls in love with another guy who doesn't trust her and actually wants to kill her. The Seeker keeps looking for her and becomes violent and enraged- human like. She doesn't understand what is going on with her and neither do her colleagues who are part of this operation. Eventually she catches up with the resistance.
The Host is two hours looong. And about 1 hour of that time is spend on hypercloseups of faces and creepy eyes. I think it's absolutely necessary for the betterment of humanity that movies return to a normal pace especially in movies for young people, movies that stay away from the brain-frying frenetic pace and schizophrenic editing. But not like this. The Host abuses the viewer in the opposite way. The constant music is brutally overbearing and obnoxious, while in general it's pleasant music, having to listen to it for more than two full hours isn't. The movie looks beautiful- the futuristic alien sets, the fuzzy alien soul light balls, the nature of the human world, the cosmic end credits, etc. Saoirse Ronan doesn't make a good lead though- she already looks to alienish and weird. And it's annoying to hear constant arguments with her voiced-over self. William Hurt gives the best performance as the wise old human who isn't gung-ho on violence.
The story in principle is nothing new but it poses an interesting challenge. If aliens are nice and peaceful and have created a perfect world, why should we root for the nasty, violent, vulgar humans that basically ruin everything they touch? I couldn't root for the humans and one may think that the movie is going to go for some ultimate confrontation between humans and aliens with a predictable winner, it doesn't go that way, instead it chooses the far more unlikely scenario but nicer scenario.
Had this movie been edited down to 90 minutes it would have been far more tolerable. For teens though with a lot of patience this is a good movie that stays away from from the sickness and perversion that Hollywood loves to inflict on young moviegoers. For them I would rate this an 8.5.
If you're trying to decide if you wish to see this movie, decide by the following: If you're looking for a pure sci-fi movie, keep on searching, this is not for you. However if you're looking for a fantastic love-story and drama which happens to be set in a wonderful sci-fi environment, you must see this one.
This movie really split the audience - some people can't stop loving, while others can't stop hating it. At the first glance this sounds like a downside, but in fact it really is quite the opposite: Movies like this require you to have a certain type of open-mindedness, a hunger for a different, deeper kind of art. If you can find it in yourself then The Host will embrace you, but if you don't...
Negatives: Like with all book adaptations, the book itself is better, but that doesn't necessarily make the movie bad! Also Stephenie Meyer couldn't get away from her love for love-triangles (more like a love-square in this case), you have that here too, but unlike in Twilight - instead of being awkward - here it all makes sense.
The greatest issue with the movie is however, that it's too short. All the changes of characters, the reasons behind what is happening and why, and stuff like that is well explained in the book.. but here in the move these things come too fast, with more subtle hints about their reasons.
Positives: The rush of the movie is well compensated: The cast is absolutely wonderful, some of the years best acting performances are in this one. The book itself offered some very fascinating, exciting and love inspiring characters, who are great but also offer great challenges to an actor. Here they just nailed it, Jeb, Jared, Ian, all of them and especially Melanie and Wanda... Saoirse Ronan made them come alive so well, I doubt anyone else in the world could do any better.
Completing the great performance from the crew, the soundtrack of the movie is a masterpiece. It helps a lot in understanding how the characters feel and keeps you interested all the way to the end.
Above all this, its world is very interesting, the story thrilling and most of all: heart breaking. The Host is one of those movies what you just can't get out of your head. It sneaks up on you slowly, but surely: You fall in love with the characters and get excited of it all so much, that even weeks after watching you will find yourself still thinking about it.
After watching: If you liked the movie, read the book! It's not just worth it, but it helps in understanding what the characters go through and who they really are. (Tip: get the latest release of the book, it contains an extra chapter which is just stunning!)
The Host will make perfect sense to 12-year-old girls, while their college-age sisters will probably laugh themselves sick and their mothers will look at Hurt and wonder when he got so old.
