[ARTICLE] 2NE1′s 3rd Anniversary Countdown Special: D-9 “A debut stage like no other"
Who can forget May 17th 2009?
It was truly a day that had been, “a long time coming“. The date of one of the most highly anticipated debuts of recent years. The date of 2NE1′s first ‘scandal’. The day when 2NE1 would cement their nickname as ‘the fiercesome foursome’. It was the date 2NE1 had their first ever live performance, a date we celebrate with nostalgic pride to this day.
From the very sight of Minzy‘s sneaker to the first time 2NE1 walked down those steps and landed onto that stage, as CL yelled out Fire‘s intro lines, that would soon become instantly recognizable by Blackjacks the world over, it was and still is without a doubt that these four girls were born to be on stage.
I go by the name CL of 2NE1
It’s been a long time comin’, but we here now
And we ’bout to set the roof on fire baby (Uh oh)
You better get yours, cuz I’m gettin’ mine.
2NE1’s debut stage was highly anticipated by practically everyone in the industry, due to the major hype that YGE had built up, and of course Bom, Dara, and CL‘s large pre-debut fanbases. Anticipation reached new heights (if it was even possible) when it was announced that 2NE1’s debut stage was going to be 6 minutes long. Back then, a debut stage of this length was literally unheard of in the KPop universe as rookie groups are rarely, if ever given such special treatment. This would be just the first of a long line of claims of SBS bias to 2NE1 and YGE.
Korean Blackjacks, who attended the prerecording by the hundreds, told us that 2NE1 recorded their debut stage 6 times until they were satisfied with their performance. Choreographer Shaun Evaristo even shared his experience at the recording, citing that the atmosphere was very tense and the girls did really well. It was also through him that we got to know that Minzy learned her solo dance just the night before and that CL was supposed to give the chair a good kick at the end of her solo, but that was deemed too aggressive for Korean audiences. 2NE1 showed that it takes commitment and hard work and buckets of charisma to not just put up a performance, but to wow the audience, and wow the audience they did.
To the tune of “Pretty Boy" and starting with maknae’s Minzy‘s amazing krumping dance intro accompanied by her ferocious death glare, to fresh Dara hitting out a number with a fan, sexy Bom showing off those sexy scarf moves, and “last but definitely not least", fierce leader CLwho escalated the already-heated atmosphere with the “abused" chair and to the the final ending of all four girls staring out murderously from the elevator lift gates, 2NE1’s debut intro became one of the most memorable debut intros ever in the history of Kpop. It was the perfect prelude to the powerful performance of ‘Fire’ that was to follow.
Relieve the historical performance
And what an impactful performance it was. Right after the performance, comments from netizens came pouring in, saying that the girls didn’t look like rookies at all. Well, what can we say? Those are our girls indeed. We can proudly say that 2NE1 definitely lived up to the hype around them with an unbeatable debut performance. It was a stage that sent out a warning to everyone who watched it… 2NE1 was going to set the roof on fire from now on, and there was no stopping them. 2NE1′s live performances are simply on another level, don’t you agree?
But of course, with everyone anticipating their debut performance, and a huge burden on their shoulders due to YGE’s track record with girl groups, the pressure was on for the girls. Ironically, though they looked tired back stage, we didn’t see much of their nervousness, instead 2NE1TV gave us our first taste of the ladies behind the fierceness.
YGE gives us 2NE1 TV Episode 1: BTS of Debut Stage
2NE1 has set the bar high right from their debut stage and their performing ability just keeps on increasing over the years. Who could forget that amazing musical number that they did for MAMA 2009, or that (literally) legendary performance that saw CL ascending on stage as a phoenix at MAMA 2010? 2NE1′s live performances are always a treat for the eyes, and the ears, but that said, there are some performances that would be etched in the minds of Blackjacks forever, such as the memorable debut stage.
Blackjacks, what is your all-time favourite live performance of the girls?
Just like yesterday, we’d very much like to hear from you. We know that every Blackjack never fails to enjoy 2NE1’s performances, so tell us your most favourite (or favouriteS)! Ah gogogo~ D-9!
