[ARTICLE] 3rd Anni Countdown:
2NE1′s style-volution: From hip-hop to rock chic and everything in between
2NE1 is inseparable with ‘fashion’. This is an indisputable fact known to all. Whether you love it or hate it, 2NE1 has been making waves with their style and fashion both off and on stage, and that of course, was evident even from the very beginning. From their very first teaser images, it was clear these girls were going to have a style all of their own. The three years since their debut have seen the girls with items ranging from urban multi-colored leggings and oversized tanks, customized clothings and to tailored jackets with touches of couture in their fashion wardrobe. They have worn hip-hop chic, rock chic, candy-colored chic and almost everything in between. Just when you think you have seen it all, girls would come back wearing something cooler than ever, redefining the very idea of fashion in Kpop.

2009 was filled with many firsts for 2NE1.
They ended their eventful year on a fashionable note by winning the Best Singer Award at the “Style Icon Awards", an award show that focuses on fashion and style. In fact, Onstyle made an entire feature on the budding fashionistas, chronicling their meteoric rise from brash idols to stylistas that everyone looks out for on the red carpet, cementing their status as the fashionable idols that they’re known to be till this very day.

2NE1 at Onstyle – BTS + Interview {ROYALACES}Then in late 2010, after an unbearably long wait for a follow-up to their record-breaking debut, 2NE1 came back smashingly with a sleek new look for their next round of promotions.

Some were disappointed with the more chic and feminine 2NE1. The ‘toned-down’ look and inclusion of more couture/name-brand labels seemed to be too much of a contrast from the handmade and unique outfits that they had during their debut. To some, it was the outfits that the girls had in 2009 that made them stand out. With less of the unique, eye-catching and brazen clothes, it just somehow wasn’t the same in 2010.
But nevertheless, our girls proved the success of their new fashion direction.. Their new look bagged them the 2010 Style Icon Award for Best Singer. 2NE1 certainly made winning these awards effortless don’t they? It was also then that CL stunned the crowd in the iconic Jeremy Scott hanger dress, earning rave reviews from red-carpet watchers. It seemed as if the dress was made for CL and CL only while the rest of 2NE1 too, shined in their stained glass inspired outfits by the American designer.

2011 bore witness to yet another stage in the 2NE1 style-volution. From punk-rock inspired looks with plenty of leather, spikes and crazy hairstyles for I Am The Best, to fully customized outfits for Ugly, 2NE1 continued to stun us with each style that they came up with. It was as if the style gods were exceptionally generous in blessing the girls in the style department, no matter what they wore showcased the mood of each song perfectly. Even off-stage, 2NE1′s fashion was inspiring, from leader CL’s rebellious sweater to Bom showcasing her mile-long legs in sexy hosiery, it was evident that fashion for 2NE1 is more than just the clothes stylists pick our for them to convey concepts but rather a way of life, and one that they embrace wholeheartedly at that.
Even straight down to their hairstyles. If there’s anything 2NE1 is famous for besides the blinding colors and wonderfully bizarre prints on their clothing, it’s their hair. We saw 2NE1 start off with sweet, typical-Kpop brunette locks that were styled into odd up-do’s every now and then.
Who can forget Dara’s trademark palm tree ponytail? Or CL’s rooster-like faux-hawk? And that’s started since 2009.
In their 3 years, Dara has definitely spelled out the rest of her hairstory. Since 2009, Dara’s been known to rock the craziest looks out of the foursome. We’ve also seen the girls dip their locks into some divine colors like a fiery red on equally feisty Bom and more recently, a silvery lavender / violet shade on husky-voiced hunny, maknae Minzy. They’ve played around with wigs as well, like those normally-hideous-but-oddly-flattering ones they wore in the It Hurts MV.
Style is clearly synonymous with 2NE1. Not because of the awards or just how dang good they look in whatever it is they wear, but for 2NE1, fashion is a way of self-expression. If music is their first-language, fashion is their second. Even as three years has passed (almost!), it is undeniable that 2NE1 has never failed to surprise Blackjacks with their fashion choices. Their style-volution is still ongoing, and we just can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves next.
But before we see their next round of style-volution, let us vote and discuss.
Blackjacks, what was your favourite 2NE1 style of the gazillions that they’ve tried? What did you like or dislike about any of their fashion choices?
Be it photoshoots, promotional styles, airport fashion, there’s bound to be one look that tickles your fancy! So join us in this brief recollection of their best fashion moments as we countdown to their 3rd Anniversary!
