Who would have thought that Blackjacks would have become used to strange, a-typical promotion tactics for 2NE1. Since the beginning of their journey in the entertainment world, our girls set themselves apart from rookies. When 2NE1 debuted, it was unheard of for an idol group not to appear on every single music show that would have them and to attend tons of variety shows.
2NE1 & YGE took the rookie idol playbook and burned it.
Back in 2009, with a strategy that at the time many were calling insane, YGE announced that 2NE1 would limit variety show appearances:
In the era that full of media and public opinion, it is hard to make issues without taking part in broadcast shows. However, the most important thing is still based on the planning and music. There will be not much broadcast activities for the girls in the upcoming time.
In fact, 2NE1 only performed on one music show per week during their debut era, typically on SBS, surprise surprise. It was only on their 4th ‘Fire’ Stage that they moved on to perform at KBS Music Bank. Many were doubting if this strategy of one performance per week would benefit the girls, but we could see that it definitely did.
With so little broadcast time, 2NE1 was able to make sure every performance was like a debut performance – they improved and made small little changes to their choreography every week till it was finalized to what the ‘Fire’ choreography is today. The girls put 1000% into each performance, making each one a memorable show of their weekly growth and spectacular charisma.
During the ‘I Don’t Care’ era, YGE increased the performance time to twice per week, appearing on SBS Inkigayo and KBS Music Bank which were set two days apart. The break in the days allowed the girls to take a rest, which we were grateful for. YG always takes care of their artists.
During the 42.195km marathon, 2NE1 has just taken the first step in it. They are still not yet started to show off everything, so please do not simply comment on the start. ~~ Mr. YG
With little to no variety and only a few radio show appearances in 2009, it would deem a miracle to the industry people at how popular 2NE1 got, solely based on their music. And to Blackjacks, we know they are miracle wonders.
Then in 2010 for their first full album promotion cycle, it was yet another bizarre promotion strategy – the triple title track strategy. The reason for this strategy was to showcase different sides of themselves. And we would agree that ‘Can’t Nobody’, ‘Go Away’ and ‘Clap Your Hands’ indeed showed different sides of the girls.
However, the triple title track strategy did affect the sales for the songs as fans were torn on which of the three title tracks to push to the top and personal preferences were a huge factor as well. Amazingly, 2NE1 managed to overcome all of this, and with their music power, all of their three title tracks managed to snag awards, with “Go Away" the undisputed leader in Korea and “Can’t Nobody" the overseas favorite.
Once again, during this round of promotion, 2NE1 had very little variety or radio show appearances.
The latest 2nd mini album had an even more unheard of promotion strategy – it seems as if every cycle of promotion strategies will surprise Blackjacks even further. Instead of releasing the entire mini album straightaway, YGE decided to release all the songs, one by one digitally, every 3 weeks before dropping the physical mini album.
From the 1st release of Don’t Cry to the last song ‘Ugly’, each of these songs were dropped individually first. And who could have guessed the digital prowess of our girls. All of the songs snagged top positions in the music charts every single time it was released and it was then that our girls earned the nickname of the ‘All Kill Queens’.
Unfortunately, though, the girls had no variety or radio show appearances for this cycle at all, which was a huge pity. But seeing as how they killed it just through their music, the success of their songs is an amazing feat that all Blackjacks can be proud of.
Throughout their 3 year journey in the industry, the fact that they had few variety show appearances is understandable because the girls themselves have said they aren’t comfortable with doing it. However, radio show appearances allowed us to revel in their glorious English covers such as Take A Bow, Say Goodbye,Broken Hearted Girl and many more. It was definitely a pity to see fewer and fewer radio appearances with every round of promotion cycles, especially with performances like this one:
So Blackjacks, it’s your turn to tell us:
Leave your comments behind~ We’d love to know what Blackjacks think of
2NE1’s promotion cycles!
