For this special review, we asked two of our staff to give us their thoughts on the first animated venture for the girls. What did they have to say?
Let me just start out by saying that when I first heard about the animated concept, I wasn’t looking forward to the music video. I had a similar experience happen back in 2008 when Britney Spears (one of my all-time favorite singers) released an animated music video for her song, Break The Ice. To put it simply, I was super disappointed that I never actually got to see the real Britney, and found the concept boring. So when I heard 2NE1 was going to do something similar, I was not a happy Blackjack.
Thus, when the actual MV came out, I wasn’t as ecstatic as I would normally be with the release of a 2NE1 music video. If it had been anyone besides 2NE1, I probably wouldn’t have even given it a chance. But I pressed play and hoped for the best.
Sadly, I still came out disappointed.
I liked the wide range of colors and the details around the eyes are nice, but when I see a 2NE1 music video, I want to see their actual faces. And this just didn’t cut it.
However, there was one thing that saved this music video for me: Bom’s character. I thought it was cute when she pulled out a pink phone to take a picture of herself (although I personally think Sandara would have been a more appropriate choice considering how often she uploads pictures to her me2day), and I laughed out loud when I saw her waltzing through the club, lost in her own world while chomping down on a cob of corn. And then the moment where she shoots the gun only to have it fly out of her hands seconds later is priceless.
But…why was Bom the only one given any personality? Maybe it’s just me, but if it weren’t for the hair styles and the little intro at the beginning with their names, I would never have been able to tell CL apart from Minzy or Dara. All three of them had the same serious, fierce attitude and there was nothing that made them stand out. For instance, Bom’s character was clear when we saw the corn. So if Bom got to have corn, why wasn’t Minzy walking around with say, a Stitch doll? Why wasn’t CL carrying her beloved Rilakkuma? Why wasn’t TamTam glued to Sandara’s side? I know CL and Minzy are quieter so it could be argued that their characters do really resemble them, but to me it seems like only Bom’s character was truly brought to life.
And then there’s the plot. I’m guessing it’s because of the lack of dialogue, but I found it too simple and it seemed too rushed and slow at the same time. The beginning managed to attract my attention, but it started to bore me towards the end and I was left unsatisfied when it ended. The storyline just seemed unfinished, like something was missing.
Overall, it did actually turn out better than I expected it to be, but considering my my expectations were not high… Over time I have learned to accept the animated part, and have grown to like it more than I originally did, but I don’t replay it constantly like I do to other 2NE1 music videos – it has secured a spot as one of my least favorite music videos from our girls.
As for the song itself, once again, I wasn’t impressed and I think my dislike for the song makes my dislike for the video stronger. I thought the song might eventually grow on me, but after a year of trying to force myself to like it, I still skip the song 90% of the time when listening to the CD. The chorus is really the only part I like, and I think if the original f*** you chorus had been kept I would enjoy the song more. However, I actually like the song when I’m listening to the acapella version, so I guess it’s just the instrumental I’m not too fond of.
Rating (out of 5): 2.5
When I first learned about 2NE1′s animated concept I was really excited. animation offers a wide range of fun concept’s and a chance to see your favorites as cartoons, which I happen to love. So I was really looking forward to seeing what the “Hate You" music video would be like!
The video was cute and yet it offered a more goth side in some parts (like the creepy bartenders and the otherworldly patrons at the bar). The man actually became a scary monster! The combination of cute and scary is something I’ve always enjoyed, and the fact it was coupled with 2NE1 and music made it even better for me.
I enjoyed the video even more when I heard the original was supposed to be F*** you. I have to admit it part of me wanted to hear a more fierce side of 2NE1, but I loved the plot and the characterizations of the ladies in the video. I also loved that they succeeded in riding the world of a deadly monster, and then drove off in a Pink Hummer with a skull and crossbones painted on the hood. There is one thing I did want to see in the video – dialogue! I would have loved a little animated mini movie, with each of them voicing their characters.
All in all, I loved the music video and song. I thought Mari Kim did a great job, and the video seemed to match the song’s edginess perfectly. “Hate You" was a song I felt anybody could relate to because there will always be that moment when you feel like just saying “You really suck, I hate you" to all your problems (maybe even people). The video showed our ladies matching the lyrics, and the emotions that can follow: anger, stress, aggressiveness, and even moment of doubt that comes with memories. “Hate You" is a song I always let play. The next time I’m stressed and can’t find a way to get it out, I’ll just play Hate you and sing it out!
Rating (out of 5): Perfect 5!
So our first roundtable review came up with two very different opinions on “Hate You."
And remember to be on the lookout as the MV for “I LOVE YOU" will be out today!
Exactly what time…We shall all patiently wait for o.O
