Disney And Pixar Animations began to work together 1991, and when Pixar had a big success with their first full length movie Toy Story, the deal evolved into a five-movie arrangement.
All the following Pixar movies were more successfull than the last one, and the most recent one, "Finding Nemo" made 844 million dollars. Disneys indepentent movies on the other hand flopped big time. (with the exception of Lilo & Stich, even though it generated less money than The Pixar-movie that made the least money, which was Toy Story (and that was mainly because Pixar were not that famous yet))
When the contract was running out, Disney really wanted to keep the relationship working, as the deal made them the owner of 50% of the movies Pixar made, which meant a lot of cash. But the CEO of Pixar, Steve Jobs (Apple), wanted the north California studio to become independent. He still wanted to hire Disney for the promotion and distribution though. Disney said that they were not for rent for anybody. This is how the partnership ended.
Pixar will do fine as there are tons of other companies more than willing to help them out, but the big shame is that Disney owns the right to produce sequals for the movies that they were in on. For example, they have already announced a Toy Story 3. Prepare for a let down.
