Titan - Steps
4/5
Titan - Gustav Larsson on vocals, Gustav Bergstrom on bass, Kristian Larsen on guitars, Christofer Björck on keyboards, and Simon Cop on drums - was formed in Helsingborg, Sweden. The band comes from the ashes of another band, Striker.
You'd expect a band with a name like Titan to play a huuuuuugely powerful heavy metal that would have speakers begging for mercy. So it comes as a surprise to hear the music on this debut EP.
Steps is full of surprisingly soft melodious AOR that harks back to the lighter end of the 1980's rock scene. Think Journey, the more rocking side of Chicago, Toto, Richard Marx and so on. There are strong hints of West Coast pop rock, especially in the excellent 'I Want You'.
This is not music that's going to deafen you, but that's not to belittle it. There's a lot of talent on show here. Every song has something exciting and unique in it's structure, and the guys really do mix it up. 'Top Of The World', for instance, hints at the indie-edge of The Cult. There's a lot of versatility in the way Titan approaches the songs on Steps. The lack of predictability is refreshing.
Overall, this release is arguably a bit wet in places, but that's far outweighed by the spunky fun of the whole thing. If you like the modern take on the retro sound that bands like H.E.A.T. and Dynazty peddle, you'll like this. There's already a full studio album in the works. Here's hoping it's as good as this EP!
Check out... All of it. Good stuff.
