In order to clarify the term Deus ex machina.
"In some Greek dramas the characters would become hopelessly enmeshed in a snarled, unresolvable plot. At the end another actor represented a god would be lowered onto the stage by a crane, and sort everything out with a wave of his hand. The term now refers to any unmotivated, convenient plot device. A modern example is the Great Eagles who suddenly appear exactly when needed in the Lord Of The Rings books."
