"MY COMIC FILM ROMANCE
My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way's comic book series ´The Umbrella Academy` heads to the big screen.
Optioned by Universal before the San Diego International Comic-Con, Way's Dark Horse Comics published comic book series The Umbrella Academy has now been green-lit to be turned into a movie. The Eisner Award series follows the members of the Umbrella Academy, a band of childhood superheroes who reunite years later after the death of their adoptive father, sir Reginald Hargreeves to save the world.
With discussions about who will work on the movie currently under way, Way is currently "talking screenwriters and director", revealing some people he'd love to have onboard include directors Alfonso Cuaron (´Children of Men`) and Michel Gondry (´Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind`) costume designer Colleen Atwood (´Sweeney Todd`) and possibly screenwriter Diablo Cody (´Juno`). With the movie said to be hitting the big screen perhaps as soon as 2010 or 2011, this is sure to keep the MCR frontman busy.
In a recent interview with the LA Times, Way explained his thought about the movie. "I said going in to the meetings that this film has to be progressive. It can't simply bethe next opportunity for a video game. In the way that ´The Dark Knight` made it's own rules, it needs to have it's own energy. The one thing I don't want to have happen is I don't want it to be ´Harry Potter`. And the studio doesn't want that. The boy in this history is not a boy. He is 60 years old. He is an assasin. There's so much about him that is extremly violent. It's not pretty and nice and safe. It has funny moments, but it's dark humor."
Way explains that he is very happy that "they want me to be very involved in it". and what about the films score? Will it see a post-Black Parade return from My Chemical Romance? We wouldn't be suprised. although some of the names Way has in mind might be a lottle more unexpected for fans. "I'm intrested in co-scoring it with somebody. Something like RJD2. Something completely different. Do you know what I mean? I think everything he does has an intresting 60's vibe. It almost has that dystopain ´The Prisoner` feel to it. The soundtrack can't be a straight score. It has to have some kind of quirk to it. I wan't to make the music super, super intresting. There are so many directions we could go in. Im just excited to be in this process, and I can't wait to see where it leads."
Fore those who can't wait, a second story arc called "The Umbrella Academy: Dallas", again featuring illustrations by Gabriel Ba, will have hit the shelves through Dark Horse by the time you read this. The story for the new six-issue series starts of with the Umbrella Academy having suffered some terrible losses and questioning their very future."
