“Tokio Hotel are my Gods in France - why we can be proud of the teenie-band!” - by Joko from MTV (translation by zillah, please give credit to her if you use this.) When I was 7 or 8 years old, one year lasted forever but now times flies and one year has already passed again. mann, i’m getting older- but also smarter. that’s something too! well, ladies: smart, old men who know their music, what more do you want? but enough about me. it’s a fact that a lot of stuff happened in 2007. german bands, beside Rammstein, have been able to celebrate international success. for example, i was in Paris in summer. at that time, they built gigantic stages at the Champs-Élyseés due to the national holiday. there musta been a gigantic parade with hundredthousands of french people- a fan-mile to put it frankly. so i asked my tast-driver in my best broken french, who is gonna play. should you not sit already, please do now: Tokio Hotel. that’s those guys from Magdeburg, you know. they are about 18 years old and can get small girls to start screaming. they are playing in front of hundredthousands in France! on the national holiday! the journey goes on. Italy. the same thing: the boys were guests at one of my MTV-pals and they had to relocate the studio outside to accomodate the mass of fans in the audience. then the EMAs in Munich- Europe’s biggest music award. who was part of it? Tokio Hotel. being the first german band ever who are nominated in two international categories. and the best: they even won one of the awards! even the second german export-hit Rammstein cannot compete with that. but do you know what’s the worst about all that? Germany is laughing at the Tokios. and without any reason! because there is hardly any country in that the band hasn’t had a top-10 hit yet. why is everyone laughing at them? they performed live in Munich during the EMAs and people were booing when they came on stage. that even is being aired in billions of households. also in France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, in all of Europe and the rest of the world. Tokio Hotel are megastars and incredibly successful in a lot of countries but the germans are booing when their most successful band is going on stage. what do you think the people in the foreign countries thought while sitting in front of the tv? “weird, listen to that- they are booing in Germany when a cool band is going on stage, how odd is that…” and the most absurd thing: the band is performing- and HOW! “Durch den Monsun”. in english. at the end, it’s raining on stage. the band keeps playing. then Tokio Hotel is done and the hall is totally freaking out. Standing Ovations! what the hell? touched by the performance and suddenly turned into a fan? that guy who was just booing like an idiot a minute ago is now the guy who is standing on his chair applauding? that doesn’t fit. what can you say to that? i don’t know either. you’re standing in the Olympiahall in Munich and you’re clueless. all i know is this: i’ve been applauding when they went on stage because those guys from Magdeburg, they deserve our respect! or why does every second guest in my show say “ey, Tokio Hotel, when you’re up for a collaboration, i’m with you!”. and i’m not only talking about rock or pop bands but also about those die-hard and tough rappers like Bushido and Sido. even those guys where you’d think “they’re laughing at them!”. nothing! they’re totally up to recording something with the guys and i bet Tokio Hotel would be up to it too but they got no time. too much on the road. the band has convinced everyone in the music-business last year. i hope, i could convince you too today that it’s really not a bad thing to say “Tokio Hotel? awesome band!” because to be honest, they’re last year’s Band of the Year. no album-recommendation today? you wish! go and listen to some Tokio Hotel stuff. all of Europe does it, too.
