"Jake", Juliet said, quietly.
"Yes?"
"Did your parents get angry? When you told them you loved a boy." She watched him with an uncertain expression, as if this was something that had been going through her mind a lot lately. Jake raised his eyebrows slightly, in surprise.
"No", he answered, simply. "I never really told them that I like boys as much as I like girls. They knew I messed around a lot and one day I just happened to bring a guy home. Dad said some blunt things but I guess it was out of surprise. I know he never really meant what he said, and other than that... No. They were never angry with me."
After he had spoken, it went quiet for a while. Juliet nodded slowly to herself. There seemed to be more to it than just her usual curiosity, and it made Jake wonder. He tilted his head slowly to the side.
“How come you’re asking?"
“No, I just…" Juliet raised her shoulders closer to her ears and then let them fall again with a small sigh. “I think it’s hard. To know that… my brother got treated so badly just because he doesn’t fall for girls. And that my parents didn’t even try to understand him enough to stand by his side."
“I know", Jake said in a low voice. He’d understand that it all had been harsh on her, but hearing her talk about it actually hurt a little. “I think so too. It’s unfair."
“It really is", Juliet sighed sadly. “I miss when I was little and Set was happy, and mom and dad too. Now it’s like… I’m so happy to see him, when he comes to our house, but mom and dad can’t enter the room without everything going awkward. It hurts."
Jake silently put an arm around her shoulders, and she immediately leaned onto him. She made herself small, pulled her legs up close to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, leaning her chin on her knee. She looked fragile, and very young, but at the same the words her voice carried were so mature. She was much more than a little girl – which was another thing her parents didn't seem to understand. It made Jake angry.
“It’s ridiculous. That a detail like sexuality can ruin the relationships in a family", he sighed. “And it irks me that they don’t realize you’re growing up. I've seen the way they act around me and Set, and when you’re with us. It’s like they think you’re a little kid, still. Like this whole thing with Set is something that goes over your head. Like you wouldn't notice."
“They think I still don’t get anything. That I don’t understand their grown up stuff." Juliet furrowed her brows and snorted quietly. “Truth is, their way of thinking is way more childish than mine."
“You’re right. Absolutely right."
“It’s so difficult, you know? I’m so angry with them most of the time. They treat me like a little kid and they treat my brother like he was a stranger, it makes me want to hate them, but… But I love my mom and dad. So I can’t." Juliet shoulders sank and she took a long, deep breath. “It makes me think… what if I fall in love with a girl? Would they treat me the same way they treat my brother? And is it really worth it, losing both of your children because you’re too busy not wanting to understand?"
Jake leaned his head lightly back against the wall. The words hit him hard, as he had thought the same thoughts many, many times. He was always polite when he had to meet the parents of the Hargreaves family, and he never spoke badly of them, even though they were the exact type of people he despised the most. He did it out of love, because he knew that after all Set loved his parents, and he knew that Juliet did too.
It hurt him, to know that a girl only aged twelve had to worry about being rejected the same way her brother had been. And it made him proud, that she was strong enough to stand up for herself, and knowing that her parents way of acting was wrong. That she wouldn't allow them to shape her into a perfect little daughter, without any opinions of her own.
Jake hugged her shoulders tightly as he breathed out a sigh.
“You’re strong", he said quietly. “You’re clever. And you should never let them hurt you. If you happen to fall for a girl and they dare to push you away, know that we’re here for you. We always are. I always am."
Juliet leaned her head onto Jake's shoulder and closed her eyes. Her cheeks were dry, but she shivered as if she were about to cry.
“Jake", she said quietly.
“Yes?"
“Please don’t ever break up with him."
“Don’t worry about it, cupcake."
