Chapter 4 - Pink cloud of death
- My new mentor? I asked in surprise. HE was my new mentor?? I mean, it's not that he didn't seem nice or anything like that. I't was just... HIM!? A tall, australian middle-aged man with sideburns and a rifle on his back.
Sniper, was this really a good idea? You hate children. But you can't back out now. Just keep it together.
- Well yes. Um.. Medic? Are you done with the examination?
- Yez! Schätzchen here is good to go. I'll be wiz you in a minute, go ahead, he answered.
- 'kay, thanks, mate.
- See you later, Medic! my new trainee said.
We went back to the meeting room were everybody was waiting. Just hoping for silence on our way, my desire was not yet to come true.
- So... I'm Juliet Wilein. May I guess that you are Mr. Mundy? the girl in my company asked.
I had to answer, otherwise it would be awkward for us both.
- Actually, that's my father. Just call me Sniper. Everyone calls me Sniper here.
- Okay, what are we suppose to do today? What do you guys do for a living here?
I smiled for myself.
- You'll see, mate. You'll see.
We walked the rest of the way in silence. I had nothing to ask, he had nothing to answer. We had nothing to say to each other. Sad thing is, he reminded me a lot of my father. The father that “loves" me and my sister to much to hug and care for us. The father who is obsessed with his job and works day in and day out. The father that didn’t hesitate to let me and my sister go away to Badlands for the whole summer without even knowing what the hell we were suppose to do. The father that wishes I were never born because that would make life so much easier. I hate him. I honesty hate my father for what doesn’t. I know it sounds wrong and I can’t hate someone for what they haven’t done. But he is my father, and he should care.
When I think of it, I don’t like my mom much either. But she did at least worry about me going.
As we arrived, everyone greeted us. And it looked like they had a lot of while I was gone. Empty glasses, cigarette butts and happy, cheering teammates filled the room with a joyful atmosphere. Heavy was singing, Demoman was awake, and Spy was loling. And the first thing that came to my mind was: “What the hell were in those glasses?"
Sniper coughed to get the attention and it worked almost to well as everyone started cheering even more than before.
- Come here, mate Let’s take a seat, he said and pointed at two empty chairs right in the thick.
- Hi, Juliet! I heard Heather calling for me. She sat right in front of us, in Pyros lap.
- Hi Heather! Hi Pyro, I greeted them. I didn’t know why but there was something about Pyro that scared me. Maybe the fact that I couldn’t see his, or hers, face. The gasmask it was wearing covered it.
- ‘Ey! Juliet! You are back! a fuzzy Scout tumbled towards me. Are you alright? he asked.
- Um.. I’m fine. Medic patched me up and I’m feeling great, I answered with a smile.
He smiled back and were just about to say something when we all got interrupted by a door who slammed open on the other side of the room. A woman with dark hair and a snide posture enterd the room followed by Miss Pauling.
- Greetings, Red team. Mission begins in one hour and that’s why we got to hurry, she demanded without looking at any of us. She stood at the end of the table so everyone could see her. She looked over the table and asked:
- There are two things wrong with this picture. One, where is Medic? And two, who are these children and why are they here? And keep it to the short version!
No one said a word. It felt so awkward that I just had to raise my hand.
- Okay, the older girl with rattails.
- Medic is at his office. I’m Juliet Wilein and that’s my sister Heather, I said pointing at my sister.
- Good, the woman said. I like you, you keep things easy. I’m the Announcer.
She turned around to a blackboard behind her.
- Okay, boys! Tonight’s mission is of the regular “King of the hill" type. The pass lasts for two hours and after that you are allowed to go home. Heavy! Please tell your dear friend Medic about the mission when he arrives to the locker room.
She looked at me.
- I’m guessing that you and your sister are the new apprentices. Am I right?
- Yes ma’am, I answered.
- Sniper! Are you taking care of both of these girls? she asked and looked at my new mentor.
- Well.. I do not think I’m able to teach them both, he said.
- Okay, I understand. PYRO! You’ll take care of the one in your lap. She seems to be fond of you.
A small “yay" was heard from both my sister and the gasmask dressed person.
- Team! Let’s go! Mission begins in 30 minutes!
Everybody got up and rushed out of the room, down the hallway. Sniper locked at me.
- Well? Come on now. We ain’t got all day, mate!
I looked at Miss Pauling. She nodded. I turned around and went with my new teacher to begin my first lesson.
