Year 211 AT, The Gnisterhalla Castle.
Atjelli flipped a page and glanced up from his book. Only a couple of steps left until the end of the corridor. His pale grey eyes fell back down on the new page of his book, walking the same way he took every morning to the courtyard.
The drawing covering the page made Atjelli squint. He had not seen this rune circle used in this context before. With a frown forming on his face he moved the book onto his arm and placed a hand on the page to follow the paragraph of descriptions with his long finger.
Atjelli turned the corner and the book flew out of his grasp. It made a faint thud as it landed on the floor in front of him as he took a couple of unsteady steps forward. Almost landing on his face.
He had stumbled over something on the floor. He turned to see what it was.
A Lupon bared its fangs at him and the fur on its back rose. It’s triangle shaped furry ears laying flat against the back of its head.
Atjelli’s face turned even paler than normal and he could feel the small white hairs on his bare arms rising. He slowly leaned down, reaching for his new book.
A low growl came from the Lupon and Atjelli swallowed. He didn’t know how to handle these animals. He had seen them around the castle his entire upbringing, the humans apparently adored them, but he had never had anything to do with them. Atjelli’s father had tried to convince him that the feline creatures were evil incarnate. He should protect himself, though if he hurt the creature the humans might get angry at him.
Atjelli took a slow step backward and the animal leaped towards him. He turned and ran towards the courtyard. He could feel the animal hot on his heels, but he didn’t dare look over his shoulder. The animal wasn’t big, it barely reached his knees, but it could do some damage with those huge claws and fangs.
It only took him a couple of seconds to rush a couple of meters to the courtyard and the trees there. Breathing heavily he threw himself at the first tree he reached. However, he didn’t have enough arm strength to be able to pull himself up on the first branch.
Atjelli sagged against the tree trunk and glanced back at the Lupon who now leaped towards him. He had nowhere to run.
The Lupon’s long fur shimmered in the early morning light. It’s mustard yellow slitted eyes contrasted badly with its dark green fur. The long whiskers fluttered gently in the stream of air.
Time had never gone by so slow for Atjelli before until somebody fell out of the tree crown and landed in front of him.
The boy from the tree hissed at the Lupon who cut its leap short and landed in front of the boy. The creature pressed itself against the ground and stared at the boy with wide eyes.
The Lupon and the boy stared at each other for a short moment until the boy made a shooing motion with a bandaged arm. Atjelli glanced at the boy’s arm and jerkin-clad back as he watched the Lupon scurry away, with its stomach close to the ground.
With shaking hands rubbing his temples Atjelli dropped to the ground. His legs couldn’t carry him. The boy coughed and Atjelli looked up at him.
Atjelli didn’t have to look far. The boy was short. At first, Atjelli thought that the boy might be several years younger than his own 17 years, but those eyes. They contradicted his childlike appearance.
“Why was he so angry?"
Atjelli blinked at the boy’s question until he realized what he had asked. “Um, I accidentally stepped on it- I mean him."
The boy raised an eyebrow, pulled a hand through his curly olive green hair and put a lock of chin length hair behind his pale bronze pointy ears.
They were shorter than Atjelli’s own. Which surprised Atjelli a little bit. Delen usually had longer and more droopy ears than Mronfid. They should have paler spots of skin too. Atjelli couldn’t see any on the skin that was bare of clothing.
“I see, well, I hope you learned something." The boy said and held out the hand that wasn’t bandaged towards him.
Atjelli stared at the boy’s hand and then down at his own lap. “What do you mean?"
The boy kept his hand out. “I hope you learned to look where you’re walking."
Atjelli flipped locks of his long silver hair out of his lap and behind his shoulder. Before taking the boy’s hand. It’s warm. He thought as the boy pulled him up on his feet.
“I guess." Atjelli muttered and brushed away imaginary dust from his purple robes.
The boy looked up at him through long eyelids. Atjelli shuffled his feet and pulled at his collar. He didn’t want to be here. He didn’t want to meet the boy’s eyes. “Um, thank you for your help. I need to go and find my book."
