"I-i-i-it’s...nee-wl-"
The lady frowned at him and tapped her boot. "So is it sweet or sour?"
Glancing over at his brothers Wyatt saw that they were busy with their own customers. He knew how the apples tasted. Since he ate them almost all the time. But he didn’t know if they were sweet or sour. "Jjjj-uust..aaa-...moo-oment..."
Wyatt tapped his brother’s shoulder but his brother ignored him, answering a question from his customer. Wyatt waited until his brother was done and then tapped his shoulder again. Josh turned around. "WHAT? Couldn’t you see that I was busy?"
Pouting Wyatt glanced back at his own customer only to see that the spot where she had been was empty. "...sorry...nothing."
Josh glared at him and then turned back to flog their wares. Looking around Wyatt saw his customer buying a bag of apples from one of the other carts.
Wyatt wasn’t really good at anything. He picked up the end of his braid and sat down leaning against the back of the cart. Away from all the people. Playing with the end of his braid like usual he noticed the ring. He really should try to find the woman with the knife and give it back to her, but where could the knight have taken her? To jail?
His brothers had told him that the big jail was in the capital, but that there was a small jail inside the town. Wyatt glanced towards what he thought was the center of town. What did a jail look like? He only knew that it was used to lock up people that had misbehaved. Like when his brothers had locked him up in a small box. So it was a collection of small boxes. Wyatt frowned. Maybe he could ask someone?
Rubbing the ring with his thumb Wyatt slowly stood up and glanced at his brothers over the edge of the cart. They were still busy at work, much of their merchandise still unsold.
He was just going to find the woman with the knife. It probably wouldn't take that long at all. They would probably not even notice. So with a last glance at his brothers Wyatt sneaked away in the direct the knight had disappeared.
After only a couple of steps though, he didn’t have any idea of where he should go. People milled about around him and he just stood there. Staring at the people passing him by. He didn’t dare to stop anyone and ask. Because he wasn’t really sure what he was supposed to ask. He just wanted to find the woman with the knife so he could return her ring.
Just standing there wouldn’t help him in finding her though, so he started walking, looking around at the people. The closer he got to the town center the more busy the people looked. He had never seen houses looking like this either. They were, they were looking more delicate than the small house he had grown up in. These houses seemed to be made out of wood and they had big glass windows.
People kept coming in and out of some of the houses and that made Wyatt curious, he almost wanted to go and have a look but he didn’t dare. He needed to find the woman with the knife anyway. So he couldn’t.
Wyatt continued walking down the street he was on until he saw the knight. He was going into one of the houses. Hurrying over to the house through the crowd Wyatt didn’t make it in time. There had been something different about the knight too. But he couldn’t put his finger on what it had been. He had only seen the shining metal and the back of his head.
Sitting down next to the big doorway Wyatt waited. He wanted to go inside but he wasn’t sure that he was allowed to enter. He sucked his lower lip and played with the tip of his braid for a really long time, according to him. Then he stood up and stared at the door. He had to go inside and ask the knight. Before his brothers noticed that he was gone.
Almost shaking he pushed the door open, like he had seen others do while he had been waiting. Then he stepped inside.
The air smelled tasty. People were sitting down around tables and eating. Wyatt’s tummy rumbled and he frowned. Was this an inn? Gus had talked about them. People came here to eat and travelers rented rooms and slept here.
Nodding to himself he spotted the knight. He also realized that it wasn’t the same knight that had stopped the fight between the woman with the knife and the man. The knight had removed his helmet. He was prettier. His face was smooth and faintly freckled. Thick blonde hair and oddly colored eyes. Would this knight know where the woman with the knife was even though he wasn’t the one who had taken her?
Wyatt took a step towards the table the knight was sitting at just as someone stepped past him and walked up to the same table. It was, it was the knight he had been looking for. Tall and scarred face. Dark short hair and piercing blue eyes. Wyatt opened his mouth and breathed out a sigh of relief.
Taking the steps required to reach the round table the knights were sitting at Wyatt stopped. "uuuh....err, ex-ex-ex-ex....."
The knights looked up at him. They stared. Making Wyatt’s face flush and increasing his stutter. He couldn’t finish the sentence. They at least let him try longer than most had. "Speak up, miss."
Wyatt’s blush deepened and he looked down at his own really worn and dirty shoes. The scarred faced knight thought he was a girl. "Holden, it’s a boy."
Glancing up at the pretty knight Wyatt saw that the scarred knight was staring at him intently. He couldn’t blush any deeper so he didn’t. He just wished that the floor would show mercy on him and swallow him. But of course he wasn’t that lucky. Someday, he was sure that he would be. "Oh, it’s the boy who tried to stop the disturbance I encountered earlier." The scarred knight, Holden, patted Wyatt’s head. "Good job kid, does your nose still hurt?"
Wyatt shook his head. It did, but not as much as it had before. He didn’t want to look weaker than he already did anyway. "Unn...th-th-th....uuuh...."
Not being able to get out what he wanted to say just made it even harder. What could he do? "Do you know how to write?"
Wyatt wasn’t really sure what knight Holden meant so he shook his head, looking at the floor in shame. How was he ever going to return the ring if he couldn’t even ask the knight where the woman had been taken? He heard a scuffle and a small yelp from knight Holden so he glanced up. He wasn’t sure what had happened but knight Holden was rubbing his ear, whining. "That hurt, Amber..."
Wyatt watched knight Amber roll his eyes and when knight Amber looked over at him he looked down on the floor again. Not daring to meet knight Amber's eyes. "We’re waiting for our food. Go on, boy. Tell us what you want."
Taking a deep breath Wyatt tried again, and again, and several more times until he finally managed to get his words out. "Th-the wo-oman with a kni-nife...whe-where is she?"
Glancing at them Wyatt saw knight Holden raising his eyebrows. "What do you want with her?"
Wyatt removed the ring from his finger and it felt strangely empty. Frowning he held it out towards the knight’s. "I-i w-want to-o re-tu-turn this. Fo-found in gr-ass..."
Watching the knights, waiting for a response, Wyatt almost fled when two women stepped over to the table and placed plates and cups in front of the knight’s. Wyatt licked his lips. He hadn’t eaten since breakfast. He was so hungry. "You might was well keep it kid. She’s in jail for disturbing the peace and you tried to help her. So see it as a reward for a good deed done."
Frowning Wyatt kept holding out his hand. No matter what knight Holden said, It didn’t feel right. He hadn’t really payed for it. He liked the ring but he couldn’t keep it. "I’m inclined to agree."
Knight Amber said while putting a bite of something smelling like pork into his mouth. Wyatt placed the ring on the edge of the table and shook his head. He wanted the ring, but he couldn’t keep it. If the woman with the knife was in jail he couldn’t ask her for it either. "If you don’t have anything better to do than to stand there you might as well just sit down at our table and have a bite and then I’ll take you to visit the woman."
Wyatt stared wide eyed at knight Holden, he could visit her? He would get to visit a jail? But he had to sit down first.
Sitting down at the round table knight Amber put a little bit of his and Holden’s food on a small dish and slid it over the table to Wyatt. Being very confused and befuddled over what was going on he barely noted it when knight Amber put a small fork on the table next to the plate. Wyatt’s tummy rumbled in anticipation but Wyatt just kept staring at the food. He had never seen anything like it before. "Go ahead kid, eat."
Wyatt glanced up at them both, blushed and then picked up the fork. He picked up a small amount of food on the fork and then put it into his mouth. It melted in his mouth and tasted a lot better than the food he got at home. He took another bite and then another, the food vanishing a lot faster than he wanted it to. Then he remembered that as soon as they were finished Holden would take him to jail. It was scary and exciting at the same time. None of his brother’s had ever been inside one.
He would have a lot to tell Gus and the other’s when he got home. It would be wonderful to really rub it in. Finally, finally he would have the upper hand.
Looking at the table he kept glancing at the knight’s hoping they would hurry to finish their food. They didn’t, they ate at a really slow pace. Then Holden slowed down even more and spoke instead of stuffing food in his mouth. "So what’s your name boy?"
Wyatt wanted to play with his braid, but his family did not not like it when he did that at the table so he didn’t. "Wy...Wy....Wyy-att..."
Knight Holden nodded, still not putting any food into his mouth. Wyatt wanted to pout but he didn’t. "Hmm, that’s a good name for an adventurerer isn’t it?"
Smiling Holden finally took another bite and kept looking at him. Wyatt didn’t know what kind of an answer he wanted so he just shrugged. It was a name as good as any. He didn’t know why his parents had chosen it for him. Maybe they had just run out of other names? He did have five older brothers. Gus, Billy, Bobby, Josh and Tommy. His name didn’t really match. Though, he didn’t really care.
Staring at the table they didn’t ask him any more questions. That was fine with him because it meant that they would soon be finished and they were.
After emptying their plates the knights stood up and Wyatt followed suit. "Don’t forget the ring, Wyatt."
Shaking his head Wyatt picked it up, he hadn’t been about to, then he followed the knights out of the inn.
Wyatt tapped his brother’s shoulder but his brother ignored him, answering a question from his customer. Wyatt waited until his brother was done and then tapped his shoulder again. Josh turned around. "WHAT? Couldn’t you see that I was busy?"
