Birds were chirping. He must have fallen asleep after gorging on pork. He wasn’t cold. Wyatt blinked his eyes open. The sun was going down, the fire was down to embers and he was laying against the horse. It was comfortable and warm but how long had he been sleeping?
Glancing at the horse’s head he could notice the horse watching him. Wyatt shivered and then frowned. "Wi-will you he-he-elp me be-become a kn-knight now?"
The horse nodded and Wyatt waited. Waited for something to happen but the horse didn’t say anything or do any motions to move. So Wyatt sat up. "Wi-will you?"
Snorting the horse stood up and stretched. "I always keep my promises." He took a few bites of grass and then continued. "First you need to train. You might be stronger than you look but you need to learn how to fight to be a knight."
Wyatt looked down at the ground and frowned. He wasn’t that strong. His brothers were stronger. "Hh-ow?"
Watching the horse Wyatt wondered how the horse had learned to talk. Was he very old and wise? Was that why he was a noble horse? "I don’t know. Yet."
Okay, he wasn’t very wise and maybe even not that old. Wyatt stood up. How old was he, how did he learn how to talk. If he could, why couldn’t other animals learn? "Ho-how old aa-re you? Wh-y can yo-you ta-alk?"
Wyatt started digging a hole while waiting for the horse to answer, it seemed like the horse liked to think before he answered questions sometimes. "I’m 17 and I wasn’t born a horse. I was born human. I’ve always been able to talk."
Well, that explained that. Wyatt stopped digging, walked over to the tree and pulled down rest of the pig that he had hung up so animals wouldn’t take it. "Wh-hy did yo-you decide to be-become a ho-horse an-and how di-did you become one?"
Glancing over at the boy turned horse he caught an odd expression. He put the pigs remains in the hole and then covered it with dirt. Bending his head and thanking the pig for the meal again he spread some ash over the grave. "I didn’t choose to become one. Somebody turned me against my will."
Frowning Wyatt stared at Vaughn. How horrible. How could somebody do something so mean to somebody how hadn’t asked for it? "Wh-why?"
Vaughn glanced at him and then looked away, towards the setting sun. "I don’t have the faintest idea."
Frown deepening Wyatt looked in the same direction. It was pretty but Wyatt was more inclined to think about something else. "Wo-would it be tr-training if I helped you find out who turned you?"
It looked strange when Vaughn raised his eyebrow at him. Maybe because he didn’t have any eyebrows to raise, but to Wyatt it looked like the horse was raising his eyebrow. "I guess it would."
Starting to feel excited Wyatt smiled at Vaughn. Who looked away in a huff. Becoming a knight didn’t seem so far away now. When he had become a knight he would go home again and show off. They wouldn’t be able to call him stupid and weak when he was a knight. "Th-then what should we do?"
Snorting again and moving head so his bangs didn’t fall over his eye Vaughn looked at him. "Well, I guess we could go back to the house where I grew up."
Wyatt’s smile turned upside down. Why didn’t Vaughn call his home, his home? Did they throw him out when he became a horse, how sad. "I-is it far?"
Vaughn whipped his tail, Wyatt knew that it was to chase away some flies since their cows did that too. "Just a day by walking."
Looking down at the ground still with a frown in place Wyatt sighed. He had never walked that far before. Vaughn continued after a couple of seconds. "Less than half a day by horse."
It changed position again, Wyatt’s mouth. Especially since Vaughn chuckled and lowered himself a bit. Wyatt climbed on.
Vaughn took a bite of the grass and chewed it while he started moving. The world was going by him quickly but Wyatt didn’t feel scared. He actually felt calmer than ever before. He was safe here and he was on the way to turn his life around. Get a better life. A life he was happy with.
Yawning he rubbed his ring, it was very warm and he was having trouble keeping his eyes open. Before he knew it he could see sparkles in front of his eyes. He tried to cling onto Vaughn so he wouldn’t fall off but he wasn’t there. Vaughn just wasn’t there. Looking around Wyatt knew he should be feeling scared but he didn’t. Everything was white and sparkling but he felt eerily calm.
Suddenly it started to get dark, and a wolf appeared in front of Wyatt. Still he didn’t scared, the wolf glanced at him over the shoulder and then he started walking away. Wyatt just watched him do that until he noticed footsteps on the ground going from himself after the wolf. He followed them.
Walking in the dimming light didn’t scare him either. He could feel a presence next to him. Somebody calming. That would be there if he needed help. It didn’t take long until he could see the wolf again. It was standing next to a lantern.
When he reached the lantern the wolf disappeared. It was dirty, the lantern. He rubbed the lantern with the sleeve of his white clothes and the world got a lot brighter again. "Wyatt?"
Wyatt blinked, the light was really blinding. Had he heard something, he was sure he had. "Wyatt, wake up!"
Feeling himself falling Wyatt pressed his legs together and grabbed a hold of Vaughn’s hair. He must’ve fallen asleep again. "Ss-sorry..."
Blinking Wyatt looked around. The world was dark. It was night time so he didn’t see much. "We’re here."
Glancing at the horse’s head he could notice the horse watching him. Wyatt shivered and then frowned. "Wi-will you he-he-elp me be-become a kn-knight now?"
