Wyatt couldn’t sleep. He took another chomp of the carrot and glanced over at Vaughn. It was a little bit amusing that horses could sleep standing up. The other horses didn’t seem to mind him either.
Trying to find a comfortable position on the sheaf of hay was hard. Probably because he had been sleeping a lot lately. Frowning Wyatt finished the carrot. Why couldn’t he make time pass by quicker? It was so boring.
Moving to the side Wyatt put a hand under his head and tried to look through the slits of the closed window shutter. It seemed like it was still dark out.
It was so silent. He could only hear the monotone breathing of the horses and a tremor through the ground. Wyatt sat up and then hid behind the sheaf of hay. Who could be heading over here? "Darn, I had forgotten about the stable boy."
Vaughn was muttering to himself so he hadn’t really been sleeping that deeply. Wyatt hissed to him. "What should I do?"
There was no time to answer, because the stable boy opened the door and stepped in. Glancing at him from behind the sheaf Wyatt saw him frowning at Vaughn. If there had been an extra cow or pig in his barn when went to work in the morning he would have been pretty confused as well. If the boy caught him hiding he would probably call for help.
Wyatt sat up, stretched his arms and yawned. Then he looked over at the boy and smiled. "He-hello."
The boy stared at him, confused and still frowning. "What are you doing here?"
Rubbing the back of his head he gave the boy a sheepish expression. "We-well, I’m he-here to vi-visit Va-Vaughn, but I arrived to late to wake th-the ho-household."
The boy’s expression darkened, frown deepening. "The young master isn’t here. Go talk to his parents I need to get on with the job I’m paid to do."
Wyatt nodded, got up and walked over to Vaughn, leading him out of the stable Wyatt kept glancing at the stable boy. Why did he seem so angry and unhappy. Wasn’t he happy when he was taking care of the animals in his care? Wyatt pouted. Actually he kind of missed doing his chores. He missed Molly and Tomas.
The pout turned into a frown, when he thought about he would be a bit put off too if a friend of the lord who owned their farm turned up in their barn. It would be a bit strange.
Vaughn leaned down and let Wyatt climb up as soon as they exited the stable. He seemed very eager to leave the area. He was muttering. "Maybe we should’ve asked the knight where he was staying. There’s two inn’s in town."
Tilting his head Wyatt pondered. Knight Holden had seemed to really enjoy the food. "Which one has the best food?"
It sounded like Vaughn was laughing when he started walking. The sun had started to rise so Wyatt looked around behind him. The yard and the house standing on it was humongous. Vaughn’s family had to be very rich. Why didn’t Vaughn want to be here? Why didn’t he call this house his home?
Looking at the back of Vaughn’s head as he trotted on the way to the inn with the best food Wyatt wondered about how different noble people’s families seemed. With his tummy starting to talk again he wondered if knight Holden might give him something to eat.
They stopped in front of a pretty big house in town, next to another horse who was tied to a fence. Right, he couldn’t bring Vaughn with him inside. He had to go there alone. Wyatt swallowed and rubbed his ring. Vaughn tried to look at him. "Where here, you have to go in and talk to your friend."
Wyatt kept clinging. He really didn’t want to go alone. There were people in there. "I-i-i ca-can’t see the ho-horse that knight Holden was riding."
Nodding Vaughn lowered himself a little bit. "Yeah, they have a stable on the other side of the house for the people who rents a room."
It seemed like there was no other way around it. He had to go inside and look for knight Holden. Vaughn would be waiting outside so it was alright. Taking a deep breath Wyatt slipped down to the ground. He gave Vaughn a long look and then hurried over to the inn door, which he almost got in his face when a man exited the inn.
The man barely spared him a glance, he just kept walking away. Wyatt frowned and stepped into the in. He couldn’t see knight Holden at first but then he spotted him. Furthest in, sitting at a small table in a corner. Wyatt pushed through all the people and stopped at his table.
Knight Holden looked at him for a moment and then he recognized him. "Ah, Wyatt, have a seat. How is your friend?"
Wyatt changed his weight from foot to foot, there were no other chairs. How was he going to be able to sit down? Knight Holden watched him for a while until he realized Wyatt’s dilemma. "Err, just take that chair."
Glancing over to the chair knight Holden was pointing at he saw another small table with two chairs. One of the chairs were taken by a big and fat man. The man glared at him but didn’t say anything about him not being allowed to take the chair so Wyatt reached for the chair and pulled it over to knight Holden’s table. Wyatt glanced at the man again but he was busy stuffing his mouth with food. So Wyatt sat down at knight Holden’s table. "Uu-m wh-when di-did kn-knight A-amber di-disappear?"
Knight Holden gathered up some food on a plate and placed it in front of Wyatt. "When you and I split up with him. I looked for him all over that town. We were supposed to go to the capital later that night but he didn’t return to the inn. Our horses were missing too so I had to get a new horse. I’m worried about him."
Frowning Wyatt ate the food knight Holden had given him. He had seen him after that. "I-i-i me-met kn-knight A-amber by th-the a-animal fo-folds later. "
Knight Holden mirrored his frown. It looked like he was pondering hard. "How odd, oh well, do you want to come and visit his brother with me?"
Looking at the floor Wyatt nodded hesitently.
