The manga/the un-animated movies was crap, at least if you ask me >_>.
But however the anime.. wowh, It's probably the best I've ever seen. (It's on the top 1 with Blood+ )
I like how the storyline somehow made me like both L and Kira, I thought both of them was right, and couldn't choose which one to like the most, that and the amazingly well thought/unexpected plot/story makes it one of the best anime's ever, too bad it had such a tragic ending though.

Yeah the motion picture movies were slightly disapointing and the anime goes down after L dies.

I tend to avoid mangas and animes that get too commercial, resulting that I never read/see them and may or may not miss out on something.
