Company parties were not his thing. They had insisted he’d come, though. Ridiculously he’d abided and now suffered the consequences, or rather, stood to the side after having spent an agonising hour TALKING to people. He was tired of it now. He did enough talking when he was actually at work.
It wasn’t as if he was going to dismiss the importance of mingling, however. Of course not, he wasn’t incompetent. He was Faiyu La’Crecya Estaflour, one of the youngest executives in the history of Terra Enterprises. There was a reason he was so successful, despite his young age. He was popular, even if he hadn’t particularly strived to be. But lesser men sought themselves to successful individuals, and seemed to enjoy getting his attention and approval. He just wished they wouldn’t crowd him, wished he didn’t stir such idolising in their hearts. Ugh he was starting to get poetic, where the hell had that come from?
Faiyu was broken from his thoughts rather rudely by someone who was standing far too close for comfort. What was this person’s name again? It wouldn’t do if he couldn’t remember. Eld, right? John Eld. Insignificant worker, who apparently had taken it upon himself to befriend everyone and worm his way up the company ladder by bowing in the dust to his superiours. Pathetic.
“Mr La’Crecya, I wondered where you had wandered off to!" Faiyu glanced at him, running a mental answer of ‘away from people like you’, but he didn’t reply outloud. Mr Eld kept babbling without noticing. “Standing around in a corner like another loner, eh? Not the best image for the party host now, is it?" He put on a pleasant but otherwise ingratiating smile. “Hey, I was thinking that maybe--"
Faiyu tried to drown his incessant droning out by playing Pachelbel’s D Minor in his head, but it wasn’t very effective. The man was still enthusiastically trying to converse with him, being way too friendly, still way too close. When Faiyu directed a cold eye Eld’s way the moment their shoulders almost touched, he did back off a few inches, though.
“Well... ah, I apologize, but I need to get going. My friends are probably wondering where I disappeared--" Eld hastily blurted out after he realised he wasn’t going to get a conversation out of the cold young man. “It was a pleasure talking to you, Mr La’Crecya!" He nodded quickly, seemed to hesitate for a moment, but finally scurried off when Faiyu didn’t favour him another glance. Finally some peace.
Or so he thought. It had begun trickling in slowly at first, but now the smell of cigarette smoke was wafting his way, and Faiyu made an annoyed noise, waving his hand in front of his face. Someone had the gall to smoke indoors? Faiyu hadn’t noted any signs that it was forbidden, but personally he despised it. Everyone who worked under him were well aware of this fact, as he had made it very clear from the beginning.
He scanned the room for the perpetrator and found his gaze falling on a young man with flaming hair and piercing yellow eyes. How... odd. Not that it mattered much in the long run, he’d met plenty of more peculiar people in his time. The blonde sighed and made his way over to the sitting area, where the man lounged in an arm chair, watching people around him with an amused face.
“I’d appreciate it if you did not smoke inside." Faiyu tried to place the face in front of him, but couldn’t for the life of him make himself remember it. He couldn’t be part of Terra, at the very least. Faiyu was notorious for knowing exactly who worked where, knew if they were skipping or late for work, what they were working with. This one must’ve come from somewhere else.
“Oh?" The other man looked up at him, mouth curving slightly into a smile. “I wasn’t aware it was prohibited," his voice had a peculiar lilt to it that was difficult to pin down. It sounded pleasant, but provoking at the same time. Faiyu felt his eyebrow twitch slightly.
“It’s not, but I am asking you to put it out. I don’t like it."
“Too bad, it’s one of the better pleasures I enjoy. I see no reason to put it out."
If nothing else, the man looked even more amused now, and Faiyu fought the urge to raise his voice at him, and instead let it turn icy. “Rude behaviour will only get you kicked out." He hadn’t meant for it to sound so forward, but he didn’t feel like wrapping his words up in polite manners. That, and he was starting to get a headache.
“You’re rather rude yourself," the man was smirking now. “An eye for an eye... ah, I’m afraid I didn’t catch your name, mr...?"
“That’s because I didn’t introduce myself," Faiyu shot back, crossing his arms over his chest.
“And you wouldn’t care to do so?" The man raised an eyebrow, gesturing with his cigarette towards the blonde, causing Faiyu to again wave the smoke away from his face.
“It’s polite to introduce yourself before asking for someone else’s name," Faiyu felt childish for some reason, and he was tempted to just walk away instead. He had better things to do than to argue with a stranger.
“Ah... my apologies, then," the man stubbed his cigarette out in an ash tray and stood up, holding his hand out. “I’m Septimus Grace. Pleased to make your aquaintance."
