After the murder of his family, Marine veteran Frank Castle became a vigilante known as "The Punisher" with only one goal in mind, to avenge them.
Everyone was waiting for The Punisher after his amazing reboot in Daredevil. Some people were afraid of seeing too many rampage scenes, too much blood, others were afraid it wouldn't get the veterans right. For both of those it proved to be right on point. To me they have found a very nice balance between all the characters. Bernthal as the Punisher is amazing, we already knew that. But they've added a couple of great characters : Micro, Curtis and Lewis. I didn't care much for Dinah and the Homeland arc in general, they always seemed two steps behind, too stupid for their own good. But Micro was over everyone's expectation. His story had depth, and you didn't expect such a well written friendship with Frank. It's mainly thanks to him that they were able to pull off 13 episodes. Dinah and Homeland felt like filling up, but Micro is essential to the story. And so are Curtis and Lewis, two opposite sides of the typical veteran returning from war.
As far as the villains are concerned, I'm split. I think it could have been done better, Ben Barnes looks too perfect for the part, he doesn't look like a veteran, all cleaned up, playboy and everything. He was still interesting, especially his past, but still. And Rawlins is just a monster, with no clear motivation but power. I needed more from him. Nevertheless I rate this show 9, because for all the things it got wrong, it got so many right. Despite the presence of Karen Page, The Punisher was its own little universe, it was well written, and well directed as well : the forest scene with the drones was amazing, the couple of rampage scenes with the Punisher are also great, and that Tom Waits' "Hell Broke Luce" song that came right on time was just a "oh yeah" moment... I rate it higher than Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, or Daredevil Season 2. However, like all of those, I think it could (and should) have been done in 8 episodes rather than 13. You could have removed the Homeland story, I don't understand Netflix and the whole 13 episodes thing. You could have the same budget, but less streaming needed, it's not like Netflix relies on advertising and air time...
So going into The Punisher it was going to be the first of the Marvel characters where you knew he didn't have any supernatural powers that any of the Defenders posses. Castle shares Daredevil's need for the need to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and as in the last appearance of Daredevil where he had resigned himself to taking on small legal cases that would keep him out of the Hand's cross-hairs, Castle assumed the Peter identity and kept his inner Punisher in check. In the end, Murdock and Castle have to accept that their alter-egos were ingrained and hardwired into them. And as the Punisher keeps other's at bay because he becomes tunnel visioned and has problems with communication with those who clearly are allies (reluctant or otherwise) and Daredevil is weighed down by his catholic ingrained guilt and cannot allow those who he cares about to be dragged down by his fate to be caught in grip of the Hand's tight grip. Loved the action throughout and the fight scenes were choreographed in that style we have become accustomed to the Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist installments. I can just tell you that lack of development of the Karen Page and Castle characters bond left me wanting more. You know that Page and Murdock should be together because every time they are together you can feel that undeniable attraction and hope that in the next season of Daredevil that gets resolved but at the same time you can't deny how Karen's connection with Frank is deep and unconditional. I was really disappointed that Karen's character was not more developed into the story arc of the Punisher's season. At the very least, there should have been some sort of reunion with Karen and Frank in the last episode after Frank received his freedom papers from Rafi and Marion. We deserved that at the very least. All in all, I will happily watch and re watch the Punisher and be counting the days to the next season of the Punisher.
