Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible - inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.
A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO.
I went to see Inception ready to see another Memento. Other reviews made me believe that Inception is thought-provoking, intelligent, and that viewing it requires constant attention. What I ended up viewing was a movie with a decent and interesting plot-line, but with nothing to stir my mind.
I think the main reason people think Inception is intelligent are lots of rules about dreaming that are at times a bit difficult to keep up with. The difficulty in keeping up with the rules lies in their great number - not in their complexity or innovation. All those rules are completely arbitrary, they don't stem from anything, cannot be reached through reasoning and they form no grand picture. You can dream within a dream. Time passes more slowly the deeper you go in a dream. Changing your appearance is apparently a special skill in a dream... It's logistics are a mess. If Nolan decided to go with different rules, they would still make the same amount of sense. Most of the rules feel very contrived, their only purpose to push the plot forward or to add to the sense of action. E.g. Security gets tighter as you go deeper into a dream. Of course - you need to have more action as the apex of the movie nears.
Dreams as presented in this movie have nothing to do with real dreams. Even aside from the contrived rules, they are way too orderly and sensible. So I don't get how anyone can feel thought-provoked by what is obviously fiction. Sure, one can be amazed with the idea that we're living in The Matrix, because for all we know, it might be true. One can also be amazed at the aspects of a work of fiction that pertain to reality. But how one can find a presentation of dreams that we already know is incorrect mindblowing is beyond me.
Perhaps people are fascinated with the idea that what we see may not be reality. But seriously, have you never questioned your sense of reality before seeing this movie?
When people say they're thought-provoked, I think they're confusing their thoughts with their feelings. The movie has an air of mystery, and viewers will get a sense of discovery as they became acquainted with the option of entering other people's dreams. Yet those are feelings. What exactly is there to ponder about? Hordes of reviewers say that they were left thinking, but few of them share with us specific thoughts they had.
Inception is actually a good movie. I liked a lot of scenes, and everyone played their parts well. It's just that it's not what it aims to be: revolutionary and thought-provoking.
"Inception" is probably the film that defines the boundary of the film's ability to physically and visually demonstrate that indeed everything in the world of cinema today thanks in large part to advances in special effects, is perfectly possible. Any idea, which is abstract and difficult to interpret when physically (and visually), is possible. I think "Inception" is that once tried to be "Avatar", the end of a course of decades of refinement. With "Inception" today we can say that nothing in the world of cinema is impossible.
Objectively speaking I think no doubt that Christopher Nolan did a great job, incredible, really worked and managed both the script and the direction, and talking about photography, about the production in general and the special effects are not facing a common film. It is absolutely amazing what they assume some situations presented in the film and especially the unpredictability of the film in general, get we step into a sea of emotions in every minute.
The performances of all stars are wonderful. A great Leonardo Dicaprio supported by a perfect Marion Cotilliard, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe and Tom Hardy.
The soundtrack can not be beat, and the skill with which Nolan got to believe that there is an open ending leaving clues throughout the film to decipher the true end well ... make this film one of the best of its kind and undoubtedly one of the best films in recent decades in the humble opinion of the writer of these lines.

With physics-defying, thunderous action, heart-wringing emotion and an astonishing performance from DiCaprio, Nolan delivers another true original: welcome to an undiscovered country.
[This is hardly evidence to support it was reality. The important part to the ending is that it doesn't actually matter if the top fell or not—if it's reality or not. The character arc in question could have happened with or without reality and in the end Cobb gets what he wants/needs. That is the resolution.]
8. Cobb and Mal do not end up together. This could only be a factor of reality. If it were a dream, Cobb would have found a way of keeping Mal alive in the dream so that he could be with her. a5c7b9f00b
