As a police psychologist works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop, the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion.
A man checks into a hotel and then goes out onto the ledge. People then start gathering below to see what he will do. The police are called in. The man says he will only talk to Detective Lydia Mercer, a police negotiator. Mercer's last negotiation didn't end well. When she arrives the man refuses to come in. They eventually learn he's a cop who was convicted of stealing a valuable diamond, which he denies. It seems he just escaped from prison and he says he's trying to prove his innocence.
I consider it as a fair entertainment, nothing more. Typically American way of filming and telling, with obvious predictable scheme, with rich bad guys, rotten cops, and a "very good" lead - who is not convincing at all in his character. I was glad to get away from the theatre after the viewing. It reminds me Henry Hathaway's 14 HOURS and also a bit of Spike Lee's INSIDE MAN. A curious mix up of these two films.
I was happy to recognize William Sadler - the unforgettable heavy of DIE HARD 2, the ruthless Colonel Stuart, one of the best bad guy of all movie history. He has here a small character.
Ed Harris is quite good here. But I think he was here to pay his bills.
It wasn't what i expected, it was totally awesome to be honest. I think they screwed up with the trailer as it gave to much away. Also the dramatic effects could have been dealt with better. the jump was incredible but you forget about it as soon as he lands, movies aren't suppose to do that.. then all them cops couldn't keep him secure, so its a bit far-fetched however a classic Hollywood movie thats gonna be loved!
Overall when you think about the story and weigh with the events occurring, it doesn't add up. you'd have to be a mastermind to break in to that vault like they did and get away scott-free with all the psychological tricks - all coz he was innocent. If it was one of us, highly unlikely. we'd be banging our heads against the wall!
Worthington wouldn't know how to behave if the film were a comedy; and poor Banks, after a promising, "Young Adult"–style introduction, isn't allowed to goose the script or push beyond the glass ceiling of her character.
