base of the throat. With the possible exception of the abdominal cavity, organs rarely appear as they are presented in a diagram. If the purpose of this exercise were simply to have you memorize diagrams (or computer screens), we would do only that and bypass the expense, time, and controversy of dissecting! Dissection.
FETAL PIG DISSECTION. In this lab exercise you will open the abdominal-pelvic and thoracic cavities of a fetal pig and described herein via a careful and thorough dissection. Do not remove any organs. Liver: large brown lobed structure located at the anterior end of the abdominal cavity. It metabolizes many drugs

Continue the midsagittal cut down into the pelvic region. Cut around the other side of the umbilical cord (INCISION 2), again leaving about a ?-inch
This is a handout for use during the fetal pig dissection. It includes instructions, images and steps to complete the lab; includes external anatomy, digestive system, circulatory system, and urogenital system.
Welcome to the Whitman College Biology Department's Virtual Pig Dissection (VPD)!. This site is designed as a supplement to laboratory dissections exploring introductory mammalian anatomy and physiology — it is basic and many details have been omitted for clarity. We hope that it is suitable for AP Biology students or

External Anatomy: Identify the following orientations and features of the external anatomy of your pig. dorsal, ventral, anterior, posterior; nares, pinna, nictitating membrane (Close up view here), umbilical cord (with arteries, veins, and allantoic stalk - close up view below). Examine the Oral Cavity of your pig. Make a cut to
The large, reddish-brown organ that occupies much of the abdominal space is the liver. Gently lift it up and probe it to locate the gall bladder which is on the pig's right side. The diaphragm (a thin brown muscular tissue) is the tough muscle which separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
Be sure to wear your lab apron and eye cover. Examine the diaphragm, a sheet of muscle that stretches across the abdominal cavity and separates it from the thoracic cavity where the lungs are located. The diaphragm isn't used by the fetal pig because gas exchange occurs through the umbilical cord. The diaphragm in
