I am interested in the reviews, it appears a love or hate relationship, if you are a purest this may not be what you are after but if you are a general fan or just like action flicks then you will find all you are looking for.
Character development, it seems the catch phrase for describing movies now, I certainly hope that is not the only criteria we base our reviews on, especially not this one. The major issue I see is that we know these characters, in some terms intimately and we compare bitterly any deviation.
Not only do we mark down any non-prescribed character interaction, we resist any new character that could impact the coalescence of the original crew.
Yet no mention of touch screens? Where did all the giant buttons, knobs, levers etc go? No comment? . . .
No a direct comparison is not possible, nor warranted, it is after all a different Star Trek universe to that which we knew.
The movie has merit, the characters are well defined, the action scenes are impressive and the plot although it some instances predictable (when were they not?) carried along at a good pace.
So the villain was less than? OK, it was not a giant snowflake in the sky, or an all omnipotent being raining down fire and brimstone, but a man, just a man can have just as devastating effect, as many of the Star Trek stories have shown.
I think where these movies could improve is the foundation of Star Trek, the moral stories cloaked as the 'Prime Directive', they challenge us a little more than just the end of a gun.
I like these varied characters and the new ones that Pegg and Jung have created, there is still comedy here, Quinto and Urban bring a new life to Spoke and McCoy one I enjoy greatly, the essence is still played well and it makes for great action scenes.
Even with its foibles I hope these continue, I eagerly await the next.I fought my brain for hours after finishing Star Trek Beyond to find a single good thing about it. The only thing I could find is this line, half way through the movie: "You put a tracking device on your girlfriend?" I'm not over reacting. I'm not even mad. But it is that terrible.
The cliché-ridden and predictable script honestly felt like it written by an uncreative child. The dialogue was consistently below average with every character spewing forth obnoxious 'witty-banta', the worst offender being Doctor Bones. Every single character was either one-dimensional or downright terrible with the only character going through any sort of arc or transformation being Kirk, and this was done entirely separate from the actual story. A good character arc is noticeably influenced and affects the events of the story, while in Beyond it was simply brought up in the first scene of the movie and concluded in the last scene.
Easily the worst part about the movie was it's villain Krall. I'm sick and tired of movies trying to get their viewers rooting against the villain, by making the villains make up and design hideous, and having them kill of some random/nameless side character every five minutes because they feel particularly evil this morning. None of the actors gave a good performance, and no one brought anything to their characters. Simon Pegg gave possibly the best performance in this movie, although he never had anything to work with, which is bizarre because he helped write the damn thing.
But hey, at least you can just enjoy the action, right? Not really. The visual effects varied from average to hideous, which is surprising for such an expensive film, and the actual action scenes and fight choreography were simply your bog standard affair with nothing special or entertaining about it. Despite that, this movie constantly wants you to be impressed with it's effects, continually shoving big CG images, set piece and alien design at you one after another. The actual science-fiction in this sci-fi movie was completely devoid of any interesting or any original ideas.
Before I end this unsophisticated rant of a review, I want to point out one scene in particular which honestly dumbfounded me. This be a MASSIVE SPOILER by the way, and it's best if you have already seen the film, because I honestly do a bad job of describing the scene.
In the middle of the climactic act 3 action set-piece, Kirk and the crew have to defeat the alien swarm of miniature space-ships, but don't have the weaponry to do it. So they cook up a plan to disorientate their enemy by destroying their communication devices, which they rely heavily on. Kirk and the crew somehow do this, by blasting rock- music at the alien swarm through their own spaceship. In theory this is admittedly interesting, although in practice it makes absolutely no sense, as it starts blows up the alien ships with no explanation as to why or how. But the scene gets even more absurd, as the alien swarm creates a massive wave, and Kirk's ship begins to surface up said wave, while blasting metal music, and leaving a trail of explosions behind him. This scene was a joke. And it could have been a good one. If this was a sci-fi parody, it would be hilarious. But Star Trek Beyond plays it off entirely seriously.
I could go on, but you get the point. It is easily one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time.The third instalment of the re-booted Star Trek franchise gets safely through its voyage, offering a strong returning cast and a familiar, if slightly tweaked mix of effects-heavy space action, cheeky humour and philosophical musing.The movie does not provide an answer to what happened to Carol Marcus (Alice Eve). She was still aboard the Enterprise at the end of Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) when the ship left for its 5-year mission, stating that she was happy to be part of the "Enterprise family". Star Trek Beyond takes place 2.5 years after Star Trek Into Darkness, but Carol Marcus is not referenced in the movie. According to behind-the-scenes stories, Carol Marcus was scheduled to re-appear on Star Trek Beyond in the early script stages, based on ideas from producer J.J. Abrams. The movie was initially conceived as a direct sequel to Into Darkness and would follow-up on some of the plot elements introduced in that movie. However, during pre-production, writer and initial director Roberto Orci left, and writing duties were taken over by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg. When this new team chose to take the story in a totally different direction, most of the ties to Into Darkness were also removed. Carol Marcus' presence was probably omitted because they could not fit her into the new story.
