02. Posts: 371. Loc: TYLER, TEXAS. 2002 Ford F-150 5 speed manual transmission. Anybody know why Ford says to use ATF in their manual transmissions? Seems like ATF would be too thin for the job. What about using a thin gear oil instead, like Redline MTL 70w-80?

15 Oct 2012 I don't remember which fluid but it should say in your owners manual. Transmission fluid has heavy solvent properties that break down over time. After so many miles, all kinds of gunk will collect in every nook and cranny inside your transmission. If you fill it with brand new fluid all at once, it will flush all that

3 Mar 2012 Posts: 6,384. hairyboxnoogle has a good reputation on FTE. I put type F in mine with some Slick 50. When i bought it i just knew it needed some type of atf, wonder how much it really matters. Any idea what was in there? synchros could be bad and the PO may have put some 10-30 or sae30 in there to help
