To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
In New Orleans, the former smuggler Chris Faraday has regenerated and raised a family of his own with his wife Kate and their two children. Chris works in installation of alarms and his father is locked in prison for smuggling. When his brother-in-law Andy dumps in the sea water 10 pounds of cocaine that he is smuggling for the drug lord Tim Briggs to escape from the custom officers, Chris is forced to pay Andy's debts to protect the youngster and his own family. Chris leaves his wife and children under the protection of his best friend Sebastian Abney and travels in a Container Carrier to Panama to bring counterfeit bills and raise the money to pay Briggs. But Briggs and his partner want to force Chris to smuggle drugs and will use his family to reach their objective. Meanwhile Chris is betrayed and gets in trouble in Panama.
This movie is so so forgettable, that I forgot I saw it. I was at the local library and saw the movie on a three day 'special'. I thought wow, that looks good. Took it home started watching, had a sense of deja vu, then enlightenment, "hey I saw this turkey". Just about two months ago.
I forgot about it because of: lack of character development, funky lighting(too dark to see movie), jump camera edits and cuts, predictable plot(s), common chase scenes, nothing new or original, use of filters and lighting to cover up it was shot in VIDEO!
Everyone knows the lame plot, Chris' brother-in-law (Danny) is a total incompetent crook, makes a mistake, so Chris(Walhberg) has to cover for him by getting the money back to release his brother. Misc plots of disloyalty, crazy drug dealers, corrupt sea Captain, and other forgettable shenanigans fill in the boring spots and Chris has to go to South America and leaves his family behind to be tormented by Ribsi and Sebastian.
Ribsi (Tim Briggs) has such an annoying accident he should have been shot as soon as he opened his mouth in his first scene when he said he wouldn't comprise and wait for his money. Solution? Bam! right in the head. As a guy who lives in a cheap apt high rise, with a beautiful daughter, isn't much of a dealer anyway.
Gosh, I can't remember one scene of this hyper kinetic flick.
But, you can watch 52 Pick Up, with Roy Scheider. Watch the 'projector booth' scene. It is great writing, of course by Elmore Leonard. Better yet read my review of 52 Pickup a masterpiece of noir. Let's be honest here, the two best writers we have on Earth are Shakespeare and Elmore Leonard.
I can only hope I don't 'forget' it again and find it in a video store for 50 cents and think "Hey that looks good, it has Wahlberg in it". Only to discover that I have seen it twice before.
Great action and a great cast combine to make this an exceptional action film. Okay, so the premise of the film is tried and true, an expert criminal who has gotten out of the life (Gone in 60 Seconds, etc.) is forced back in to protect a loved one. Interesting that Giovanni Ribisi is the criminal this time, tattooed and viscous, and Mark Wahlburg is the former smuggler. But when you watch the film, the entire cast is fluid and coherent, and the action is logical and reasonable. Ben Foster does an excellent job in his part, and it is nice to see Lukas Haas in a role that doesn't involve aliens or lovesick people. Veteran William Lucking, whose portrayal of "tough guys" through the years has entertained literally millions, is believable as Mark Wahlburg's dad, and J. K. Simmons (Emil Skoda in Law and Order and the Farmer's Insurance Guy, among other roles) is excellent as the corrupt Captain Camp. So in addition to a great cast, the action scenes are flawless, the continuity is perfect, and film has a consistent feel throughout that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Rated R for violence and language, this may not be a collectible unless you're a Wahlburg fan, but certainly one for the folks who love a "crime never pays" film with plenty of comeuppance for the bad guys.
No one, however, could mistake Contraband for anything but what it is: a shift-job genre movie - not a bad day's work, content to match the blocky trudge of its star rather than attempt panache.
When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would. 646f9e108c
