A salvage vessle is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo's mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path.
Greedy sailors capture a giant lizard off the coast of Ireland and sell it to a London circus. Then its mother shows up.
Here it is...the much ripped off original mother monster coming after baby monster flick...and even better, no sloppy dubbing; it's in English! Some sailors find a 65 foot monster and take it to London to show it off...no realizing that it's only a baby...BIG mistake. Some nice rubber suits in this one...the effects are actually pretty well done in this British sci-fi entry as the monsters inexplicably get loose in London. Enjoyable MONSTER flick recommended for fans.
"Gorgo" was produced in 1961 amid several other "giant monster" movies. Its in color and is better than most.
Two fortune hunters (Bill Travers, William Sylvester) capture a large apparently pre-historic sea creature and bring it to London for exhibition (shades of King Kong). Unbeknownst to all is that the creature has a mother who comes looking for her youngster. The mother is a gigantic Godzilla like creature who begins to destroy London in an effort to find her baby.
What sets this film apart are its superb special effects. I found them very realistic for the time. The destruction of London (including Big Ben) is very convincing. These effects are far superior to those seen in the Godzilla movies.
Unfortunately, "Gorgo" came near the end of the giant monster genre and did not receive its just due. If you are a fan of such movies, this one should entertain you.
