för övrigt ruskigt bra ölfat där!
What is life?
First of all I would like to start this off by saying that I am what would be considered a Nihilist. I have no beliefs in a higher power, nor a greater meaning in everything. If this somehow strongly goes against your beliefs I would suggest not reading any further as this might be offending to anyone with different beliefs.
Some people define life as the characteristics that distinguishes objects that have signaling and self-sustaining processes from those that do not, either because such functions have ceased, or because they were never there to begin with. The latter would be classified as an inanimate object.
I can honestly say that i wholeheartedly agree with the previous statement but if that’s the only thing defining life then we(as in all living objects) are only put on this planet for one sole reason. That would be to sustain our life until death.
Aristotle was one of the first philosophers to touch on the subjects of hylomorphism. He believed in a life made up by both form and matter, where matter is the "body" of the object and the form is what we commonly refer to as souls. He claimed however that matter could exist without form, but form cannot exist without matter. In other words, a body can exist without a soul but not the other way around. If this is true, life as we know it ends the instant our body dies and this in turn would mean that anything we do in life has been rendered meaningless.
Now some of you might start thinking. "Well what we do and learn can be transfered to later generations". This is all very true, but what is the point? We keep learning and pass on knowledge for what purpose? In the end none of it will matter.
After all we are all insignificant and everything we do is even more so insignificant. On a universal timeline, stretching infinitely into the past and infinitely into the future, every moment in time is infinitely insignificant.
This is how I came to the conclusion that life as we know it is pointless, there is no greater meaning in life, there is no higher power because why would there be? Nothing that could possibly exist could ever matter since everything that has a beginning has an end.
I do realise how depressing that sounds, however, having drawn this conclusion, you can draw another equally (if not even more so) important.
Life is the only thing we have in this world, so you might as well make the best of it. When it is over it is over.
If you ever find yourself on your deathbed you can always comfort yourself with the fact that your death is just as insignificant as your life was. So go on, live your life, make sure you wont have any regrets when you die and just be happy. Life is more fun that way.
