It's a long way from Amphioxus,
It's a long way to us,
It's a long way from Amphioxus
To the meanest human cuss.
Well, it's good-bye fins and gill slits,
And it's welcome lungs and hair,
It's a long, long way from Amphioxus
But we all came from there.
Travesty of A Long Way to Tipperary, written by Philip Pope in 1921. The Amphioxus is a cephalochordate, see picture, and it's the closest relative to us chordates.
The rest of the song is even cuter, google it if you wish to learn more about our primitive ancestry.
By the way, another story on the theme of Tipperary, "A Long Way to Tip-a-Rary", is very cute too, but I cry when I hear it.
