Two weeks following the events of Batman: Arkham City, several GCPD officers suddenly go missing. The culprit seems to be Harley Quinn, having escaped custody and undergone extreme mental stress following her recent loss. She has now taken over the industrial district of the old Arkham City site, which Batman infiltrates and ultimately gets himself captured so Robin will come to his rescue, and together, they can stop Harley and save the cops before the night is over.
Within the dark, heavily guarded walls of Arkham City some of Gotham's most twisted, diabolical and murderous minds are imprisoned. In Arkham City, the villains have control and they are patiently waiting and hoping for a chance to take down Gotham's hero: Batman.
I enjoyed playing through Harley Quinn's Revenge. The game has great game play and story but the game really needed a twist ending and a tougher ending boss battle. It was nice to get into Harley's head and see how she would react after The Joker was not in her life anymore. I am not sure if Paul Dini had any say in this game add on, if he didn't I wish he did. I am a large fan of The Joker and Harley Quinn and just expected a different ending or twist to lead into the next game. IT was nice to be able to play as both Robin (Time Drake) and Batman. I only wish once the game was over you would be able to explore Harley's fortress again to collect all the balloons. I hope to see Harley as the main villain in the next game and here's to hoping Mr. J returns for the next game. The Joker never dies.
If you thought Arkham Asylum couldn't be beat, think again.
After the Arkham Asylum debacle, Quincy Sharp took credit for stopping Joker's plan, and used this to become mayor of Gotham. He then closed both the asylum and Blackgate Penitentiary; Sharp purchases the slums of Gotham, and turns it into a massive prison called Arkham City. Hugo Strange is then put in place as the head psychiatrist, and given power with a rogue private military group called TYGER Security. Then of course everything goes haywire; political prisoners are taken, and even Bruce Wayne is arrested (we learn quickly that Strange knows Batman and Wayne are one man). I won't give it all away, but that is the basic premise, and from there you encounter many other problems for Batman to deal with.
Once again, the fighting is amazing here, and some new maneuvers are introduced to keep it fresh. The gadgets are a little different this time around; there are also training exercises you can do involving Batman's gliding/grappling skills, which eventually opens up an upgrade for his grappling gun to help boost you higher when you zip up to rooftops. The Riddler side quest in this game is even larger than before (which is helped by the massive open-world format of Arkham City that spans all of Gotham), and prompts the use of many gadgets to help find all his clues.
We also get some different characters and villains this time around, and some who were only alluded to in Arkham Asylum are now present with some actual screen time. The Penguin takes up a nice little portion of gameplay; we also discover he has been hiding Solomon Grundy under the National History Institute, as well as a hungry shark (the fight with Grundy is a lot of fun). Mr. Freeze becomes an uneasy ally during parts of the game, but you also have to fight him, which is a great part; Freeze's suit jams up your Detective Mode, and you can't simply fight him straight on, so you have to use your gadgets and assorted maneuvers to trick him then beat him. Poison Ivy has a great return in the Catwoman DLC. Ra's al Ghul is a large part of Arkham City, and you even get to descend into his Lazarus Pit for a very interesting altercation with the League of Shadows' leader (at first he seems to be helping you, but of course you end up fighting him). Of course, Hugo Strange plays a large part in the plot; one of my favourite angles on Batman is how he may have been the reason for so many weird criminals popping up throughout Gotham, and Strange touches on this several times in the game, which I really enjoyed. Even Clayface, Vicki Vale, the Mad Hatter, Calendar Man, and Talia al Ghul show up! My favourite portions are the small side quests. We get to see Victor Zsasz again in a quest where you have to reach pay phones in a certain amount of time, which gives you an opportunity to trace the signal of his phone call, and eventually find where he is hiding. A great Hush quest is included here; for those who don't know this storyline in the Batman graphic novels, I won't reveal the killer's identity. The Deadshot quest is also great fun. There is even a side quest involving the mysterious Azrael. Of course, a small cast of villains are also referenced in this game, and even the character of Mr. Freeze's wife (Nora Fries) makes a little cameo. Another small side quest involves rescuing various political prisoners from the hardened Blackgate criminals all around Arkham City.
One thing that struck me as very well-done in this game are the various conversations prisoners have throughout Arkham City, as you listen in while gliding throughout Gotham. There are a bunch of references to the television show Lost, and even allusions to other stories from the Batman universe. The developers really put the time in to make things feel less repetitive in other games with the AI, which I thought was an added touch.
All in all, this game is a 10 out of 10 stars. Hands down. The whole game is incredible. The story itself is wonderful, and once you've played through, you can once again go back to try and play it over with all your gadgets from the beginning, but also without the fighting prompts (you get the usual visual cues in regular mode when a villain is about to attack; in new game plus, there are no such prompts, and you have to really pay attention). I actually began a new game right away after my first completion because I loved it. The opening scene is worth going through a hundred times. In addition, the Riddler's Revenge maps are awesome, and you could spend most of your time just trying to work your way through them. All the DLC is absolutely worth getting whether you download it, or just get it all in the Game of the Year Edition. Catwoman's quests are very fun despite what some have said; I really enjoyed her different fighting style compared to Batman, and the fact you can walk the ceiling is so rad. You also get Harley Quinn's Revenge where you alternate between playing as Robin, and Batman, which I loved. Nightwing even shows up on the combat/predator maps. Very much worth the time to play everything through. There's even a neat achievement for your encounter with Calendar Man if you have 12 special visits with him (when your system recognizes a holiday on whatever date you're playing, the Calendar Man gives you a special little speech for each one).
HIGHLY recommended to all.
Wonder Tower can be accessed, but not the same way. In order to reach it, you have to get up the tower as high as possible, then start launching freeze grenades until Batman starts rising in the air. Soon, you'll be prompted to use the grapnel, grapple up to one of the gargoyles and you can go inside. There's nothing in there, not even Strange's corpse. His little office cannot be accessed. The Clown Prince of Crime meets his demise after the final battle with Clayface.Hugo Strange, Talia al Ghul, Ra's al Ghul (though his body goes missing), Solomon Grundy, Clayface and The Joker, plus hundreds of inmates in Protocol 10 a5c7b9f00b
