The adventures of a young wandering swordsman who stumbles upon a struggling martial arts school in Meiji era Japan.
A man slayer, Kenshin Himura, who played a major role in defeating Tokugawa Shogunate of feudal Japan carries his reverse blade sword (with a promise not to slay anymore). He embarks on a quest to repent for his sins by helping the innocent. He lodges in Kamia Kashin dojo where he becomes an acquaintance of Kaorou, the assistant instructor of the dojo. After being saved by Kenshin from mafia, a stubborn young boy, Yahiko Myojin joins the dojo as a student. Sanousuke, a victim of war becomes an acquaintance of Kenshin after losing to him in a duel. Together with his new friends, Kenshin carries out his ideal of helping the innocent. A series of events unfold that questions his ideal of living for the innocent and not slaying men. Kenshin faces every opponent with his reverse blade to uphold justice.
First off i am a serious fan of this anime, it alone got me involved in anime and manga..Anyway the person who wrote that they don't get this anime and didn't think it was all that great probably hasn't seen the OVA's which would probably fill in the plot hole that they spoke of in the beginning of their entry. The OVAs sum up his childhood through adolescence and i think you cant truly appreciate this anime until you've seen them, because it really helps you understand the "inner" Kenshin and you even get to see a bit of Shishio at the end when he kills the traitor, so i think that would help them to understand the plot and really make Kenshin much more enjoyable to anyone who enjoys a good anime
You cannot call yourself a sci-fi fan without watching Star Trek or Farscape. And you certainly cannot call yourself a true anime fan without watching Rurouni Kenshin. Few years ago I didn't even know the word anime, but since I accidentally saw RK I became an addict. It is full of action, fun, romance, BATTLES and most of all many COOL characters. I still can't call anyone a favourite even years after. Most of all I enjoyed the fact that the main characters are not divided into good and bad. There's just sides, which is more like in real life. If you like sword fight, samurai or just the best animes this one is a MUST-TO-SEE.

It was serialized into 28 volume books. It was then published by Viz Media in North America, by Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand, and by Gollancz Manga in the United Kingdom.
