The magical action-adventures of a teenage girl who learns of her destiny as the legendary warrior Sailor Moon and must band together with the other Sailor Soldiers to defend the Earth and Galaxy.
Usagi, a normal teenage girl, finds out she's Sailor Moon and gets into all sorts of trouble at the beginning trying to fight for love and justice. She then gets better and with her friends Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus they fight against the evils of The Dark Kingdom, The Hell Tree, and The Black Moon.
Okay, so I'm a college student. The run of Sailor Moon - US - lasted from the time I was 8 in 1995 to the time I was 14 in 2001. Sure, there was a lot of issues with the company politics, and it made itself evident in the series - with such issues as voice acting and music, and, to an extent, even the series itself. But that's another day and another rant.
Now I'm back to watching it - mainly to watch the series that I missed out on as a lame American child (But the rest of the world seemed to get it) - Sailor Stars.
So now for the review.
English DiC DUB - The dub work, while not true to the Japanese version, is still surprisingly decent. In fact, it is BETTER than the Cloverway dub. Unfortunately, they opted to drop the Musical Score and do a lot of editing - anywhere from cutting out episodes, to merging episodes, to even changing the gender of one of the Shitennou. Still, it's quite fun to watch, and is a total guilty pleasure. 6/10
English CLOVERWAY DUB - The dub work in this one is horrendous. Period. I've heard better fansubs. However, their decision to retain the music, the episodes and some of the content actually eclipses the bad dubbing. Which is to their benefit, because the musical score in Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon Super S was actually better than Season 1 and the R season. This is also where my fondest memories lie. 7/10
Japanese - This is where the good stuff comes in. Edit free, with lots of mature themes, such as violence, innuendo, nudity, homosexuality and guys turning into chicks. The themes are much more heavy-handed here as well, but the music is downright amazing, and very few animes can rival BSSM's score, even to this day. This is the one that older people getting exposed to BSSM should be introduced to. 9/10
I first saw Sailor Moon when I was about 5 or 6 years old and got imprinted in both my mind and my heart. I remember I was so fascinated with this story that I liked to pretend I was Sailor Moon and my friend were the other Sailor Senshi. Well many years passed but this cartoon was still in my memory, so last year I decided to watch all 200-episodes to remember how it was when everything was possible, when I was only I child dreaming to be a super hero. What most impressed me about Sailor Moon was not the fight, nor saving the universe, but the other story with more depth: the story of friendship and love. The love Mammoru(Darien)/Prince Endymion and Usaghi(Serena)/Princess Serenity shared was eternal. It passed through 2 deaths(first of them was when queen Beryl kills Prince Endymion to keep him away from Princess Serenity. Trying to help him the princess gets herself killed), fights, lost and sadness and was still there, everyday becoming stronger than it was a day before. The friendship pictured in this cartoon was one idealistic in which no matter what happens but fiends are always there to watch your back, to help you in times of needs, and to party in times of peace. The scene most important,in my opinion, that pictured the love of the friends is that in the first season when Princess Serenity is trying to heal the universe with the cost of her life. What gives her enough strength to make the ultimate sacrifice is the memory of her lost friends, the Sailor Senshi, which seem to hold her hand and give her the power she needed to stop the evil Queen Beryl. Their story is still alive in my heart and even though I know it is almost not possible I can't stop hoping that maybe I will find friends that will be there no matter what and a love that will become stronger as the days pass. Maybe that little girl that once watched this anime is still there, inside my heart hopping to stop those bad guys and to save the universe, maybe she isn't, but the fact remains: I do hope that there is a chance that friends and love could be as pictured in this great anime not only for myself but for everyone: if we cannot love then what will become of this world? The strength to change the world, to make it better lies in every one of us. This is a classic tale, a must-see for all children; they need to learn how to hope, how to love, how to be altruistic, but more important they need to learn how to dream. Dreaming is what will define them later as adults.
The Japanese version has more lesbians. a5c7b9f00b
