Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV grew up with a father in the Navy, who died when he was ten, and entered the Naval Academy at 18. Magnum, a third generation Naval officer, graduated the Academy, became a Navy Seal, and was sent to Vietnam. He made two life-long friends, Theodore "TC" Calvin and Orville "Rick" Wright, while serving in Vietnam. After the war, Magnum was transferred to Naval Intelligence, and stationed in Pearl Harbor. His buddies retired from the military. TC opened up a helicopter tour guide service, while Rick was a club manager. At the age of 33, Magnum woke up one morning and realized he was never 23. He quit the Navy, got a PI license and opened a practice in Hawaii. He was eventually hired by a world-renowned author and playboy, Robin Masters, to monitor security at Robin's Nest, a huge estate on the north shores of Oahu. Robin Masters would jet from one part of the world to another, and visit his various estates, and write best selling novels. Robin's Nest is run by Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, a proper Englishman. Higgins was in lineage of a Duke and served in the Royal Army as a Sergeant Major. Magnum lives in Robin's guest house, and drives Robin's Ferrari. As a result, Higgins treats Magnum as a leech; however deep down they have great respect for each other. The series follows Magnum on his various adventures, involving clients, guests staying on the estate, or plots involving his days in Vietnam. Magnum requires assistance occasionally from his friends, TC, Rick, Asst. D.A. Carol Baldwin, his buddies in Naval Intelligence; even Higgins lends a hand from time to time.
Thomas Magnum is employed on the Hawaiian estate of a wealthy absentee owner name Robin Masters. The estate is run by Jonathan Higgins who mostly tolerates Magnum's presence as head of security on the estate. Magnum is also a private detective whose cases frequently have a humorous overtone and always just enough danger.
Magnum P.I. is about the closest thing I have in connection with Hawaii. I recall a couple who left New Jersey in 1995 with a dream to live in Honolulu, Hawaii. I'm sure Hawaii is a paradise to visit but they have problems just like everywhere else. It is an expensive place to live so is where I live, New Jersey. This show is escapism and a combination of intelligence and brotherhood. Tom Magnum played wonderfully by Tom Selleck who has since moved back to Southern California and created his own paradise by having a ranch with wife and daughter beside him. Besides the rumors of his sexual orientation are just that unproven rumors. ANyway, he's a gun-toting Republican so everybody's off base. Had Magnum P.I. settled down with any woman in particular, I think it would have spoiled the dynamic of the show. There was a great sense of brotherhood among the cast members who are all male, John Hillerman who played the butler or owner whatever you want to believe about this true identity was always a great joy to watch. Funny, he's not British but from Texas. Larry Manetti and Roger E. Mosley played the bar owner and helicopter pilot and friend to Magnum. They knew each other from Vietnam which deepens their relationship with each other in a platonic way. Yes, there were girls and only British resident Agatha was a regular but that was the point. If Tom had settled down during the show, the show would have been over. Anyway, this series was a great and I despise when Hollywood takes a good series and recasts with them anybody less than the original. Tom can still play Magnum and the rest of the cast can still come back. DUring the final season of the show, Tom threw the best wrap parties, gave raises to the cast and crew, and expensive gifts from his bonus for staying one year.
I don't generally think very much of television shows for many reasons. Although I can't correlate the two events, when Magnum went off air in 1988 I stopped watching network television and haven't watched it since. I was never a big TV fan so when Magnum went off air it was just the reason I needed to turn off the tube.
Magnum was a great show because it offered fine actors usually giving excellent performances, great production values, always great music, and almost always interesting, and, frequently very moving, story lines that were typically believable. Magnum was never a super hero just a regular guy trying to make some money and have fun doing it. I can't compare Magnum to anything more recent but it does compare favorable to the Rockford Files. I can't recall the names of the great episodes but the last few involving Magnum's Vietnamese girlfriend were very good.
In the second season episode, "Memories Are Forever", Magnum is called to Washington, D.C. for testimony and is reinstated in the Navy as a full Commander - two grades up from a Lieutenant. It's possible or at least he may be Robin Masters ghost writer who is actually responsible for his output of trashy best-selling novels. Robin Masters is certainly a real person and we glimpse him from time to time on the show but he may be Higgins' writing partner or just someone he's hired to be the public face of the celebrated author in order to maintain his privacy. It would certainly cast his relationship with Magnum in a new light as this means he's really Higgins' guest, possibly in order to provide some excitement in Higgins' life or give him some inspiration for his writing. It seems almost certain. The cast experience a curse on a Kahuna statue in 'Ki'is don't lie'. We see several ghosts during the course of the show notably in 'The Woman on the Beach' whilst Magnum hovers between the real world and the afterlife during 'Limbo'. Magnum seems somewhat psychic, his dreams and 'little voice' often providing him with amazing insight and information which he could otherwise not know, even of events from before his birth such as 'Forever in time' and 'Flashback'. It also seems to extend to the other characters, in 'Home from the sea' when Magnum is adrift in the ocean his friends seem to simply sense he is in trouble and come to his rescue. At least 4, Higgins father was a notorious womaniser who seemed to leave women pregnant throughout the British Empire during a lifetime of military service. During the course of the series we meet Texan cowboy Elmo Ziller, Irish priest 'Father' Paddy and South American aristocrat Don Luis. All are nearly identical in appearance as they are all played by John Hillerman (Elmo Ziller allowing him to use his genuine Texan accent for once) Father Paddy also refers to Soong Lu, another half-brother (or possibly half-sister?) of Oriental heritage.Magnum is reunited with his daughter whom he presumed was dead. In the last scene of the series we see him back in naval officers uniform implying that he returned to the US Navy in order to better provide for her. Rick marries his long term girlfriend although he seems to hesitate at the last moment and we never do learn if he says 'I do' or not. Higgins confesses to Magnum that he really is Robin Masters but later tells him that he is actually lying. TC moves in with his troubled teenage son and vows to be more responsible in order to provide him with a better role model. In the final shot of the show we see Magnum in his naval commander's uniform turn to face the camera, smile, say 'Goodbye' and turn off the screen using a remote control a5c7b9f00b
