The story takes place beginning in year 2022. A new game called Sword Art Online (SAO for short), has come out on the NerveGear. A new technology that allows players to be inside the game. Beta tester and solo player Kirito re-enters SAO where he soon meets and befriends a newbie player. Then, the game's secrets spill from the shadows...
The year is 2022, and gamers have lined up on launch day for Sword Art Online, a hotly-anticipated MMORPG that lets players connect to an immersive virtual reality world with special helmets called Nerve Gear. Kirito is one such gamer who's eager to jump back into action, having spent a great deal of time as a beta tester, and quickly becomes friends with newbie warrior Klein. But soon, Sword Art Online's 10,000 players discover that not only are they unable to log out, the only way they can return to their physical bodies is by beating the 100-level tower's final boss - death in the game means death in the real world. Now, with no one else to turn to, Kirito and the other participants must survive the game as best they can.
Most of the characters have a severe case of blandness and it's more predictable than a house tour, to call it surface level would be an insult to the ground floor.

The anime Sword Art Online is a great watch, with strong romance, hooking story, and a on the edge of your seat show.
The thing that SAO excels at over most anime is that the plot is interesting, with a great, balanced mix of romance, action, and suspense. The characters are very like-able, and the animation and voice acting (even for eng dub) is great. The romance is filled with uplifting humor and serious compassion and emotion. The best thing about the show is it is able to tell a very well story with a uplifting plot and atmosphere, even when it is life or death. Another great thing is the characters are very like-able, not overly depressing, and are not insane to the point where it bothers you. Also, the show does a great job of introducing more characters each episode who are also very like-able. This allows you to fall in love with all characters other then just Kirito being the only character you enjoy.
