A dramatization of the battle that was widely heralded as a turning point of the Pacific Theatre of World War II.
The summer of 1942 brought Naval stalemate to the Pacific as the American and Japanese fleets stood at even numbers each waiting for the other to begin a renewed offensive. "Midway" tells the story of this historic June battle where a Japanese carrier force, in an attempt to occupy Midway island and lure the American fleet to destruction, was meet valiently by US forces operating off of three aircraft carriers and numerous escort ships. It was the first battle in which naval air power was extensivly used, and at its conclusion the Japanese Carrier force had been completly destroyed which lead the way for the US 1943 and 44 offensives which would eventually bring the Pacific War to a close.
I can not hide, that this movie, as rightly awful as it sometimes is, has some fascination for me. I couldn't quite explain it, possibly the thing is, that today, with a state-of-the-art PC and a DVD library subscription, you could do the most of the film by yourself. Get "Tora, Tora, Tora" , "15 Seconds over Tokyo", "Victory at Sea" on DVD and start your cutter / editor career. What you don't have (and what the movie certainly doesn't need) are the cameo-like Cast appearances (R. Mitchum, R. Wagner, James Coburn) and the absolutely unnecessary love story. But as i said, for all the kitsch and badly put together compilation it is, i can't stop watching it from time to time. Judge by yourself (rent don't buy, unless in China, where it goes for a dollar or less). Charlton Heston ? He doesn't wear sandals for a start...
Midway is a decent movie filled with great actors, and it follows the actual event during WW2 pretty closely. What kept this movie from being a truly great movie was all the dumb goofs, and bad actual footage of the battle. Someone needs to remake this important movie, but make sure the battle scenes are kept accurate by showing the correct airplanes, and ships of that time. Example: The 5 inch guns turrets , and a battleships main turret guns were not used to shoot down airplanes coming in for attack on a ship.
