Book descriptionNot for me. I thought this would be a history of why writing exists. Instead, I found this to be a jumble and mishmash of stories, anecdotes and asides that dont really pull themselves together. Rather than it being a discussion of how writing evolved and the eventual need (thats discussed in the very beginning), its really more about the history of types of writing, from literature to coding.В It was really frustrating to go through an explanation of computer coding and its purpose (plus how it works) and then go back through the history of computers. The book is somewhat like that. We get one particular angle and then explore the greater historical/cultural/societal context, which sometimes works but oftentimes doesnt. It struck me as aimless and ramble-y.В I guess I was disappointed because I was looking more for a historical/scientific discussion of the topic rather than the exploration of the concept of writing through its various forms, whether its as literature or hieroglyphics or Chinese characters or whatever. Im not sure the book answers the question: Why does writing exist? as listed in the book flap. Perhaps it addresses this question on a smaller scale via the Bible or computer codes or whatever, but how it came to be wasnt addressed as much.В Recommend the library if youre really interested.Palimpsest: A History of the Written Word by Matthew Battles find pc online reading story
