Sixteen years ago, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) took the lead in this endeavor by creating the first set of standards and guidelines for the 40 and 60 square feet of space at any given time in the group exercise room, and between 25 and 50 square feet per piece of equipment on the fitness floor.
