From Winterhawk to Winterhawk’s Land by Award Winning Actor Michael Dante IT WAS AN HONOR for me to play the title role, in the 1975 classic film, of ‘Winterhawk.’ I immediately identified with the legendary Blackfoot Chief’s character and principles. I knew that I could match his physical presence on the screen, showing his strength of body and mind. My choice as an actor, to make Winterhawk a spiritual man, added many more nuances to his character. His gifted leadership qualities, along with his dignity, honor and nobility separated Winterhawk from the character of those that were out to destroy him. In Winterhawk’s Land, the ruthless railroad executives tried to assassinate him in order to build the railroad directly through his territory, taking the Blackfoot land without provocation. Just as Winterhawk did, many of the early Native American tribes remained strong, as long as they could, to protect the land of their People, the land they called home, before the invasion of progress imposed itself on America. I was inspired to write this novella, the sequel to the engaging film Winterhawk, with all the beautiful memories I have of this great man, that will live within me forever. This is the story of a brave man, a leader of his People, who stood up to and fought against those who had their own agenda for Winterhawk’s Land.
