23 Jul 2010 Every once in a while, I return to Henry Labouchere's poem, 'The Brown Man's Burden.' It was written in 1899 and a response to another, much more famous poem. To read it with the conflict of the last seventy or eighty years in mind (and for that matter, the Second Iraq War) is an interesting experience.
Much like Lulu Baxter Guy's "The Black Man's Burden," Henry Labouchere's "The Brown Man's Burden" shifts the emphasis of Kipling's notorious poem, offering a view of imperialism from the perspective of those who were most directly affected by the expansionist policies of nations like Britain and the United States.
