C'era una volta Amy Winehouse, star della musica, jazz singer del calibro di Ella Fitzgerald e Billie Holiday, morta di arresto cardiaco a 27 anni, nella sua casa di Londra, provata nel corpo minuto dall'eccesso di alcol e droga, forse proprio mentre ne stava venendo fuori. E c'era una volta Amy, prima del cognome, prima del successo, prima del dimagrimento eccessivo, della vertigine romantica e della perdita di sé, appunto.
Asif Kapadia va indietro nel tempo a recuperare la ragazzina in carne che fa le boccacce nei video fatti in casa e non ha ancora avuto l'idea di cotonarsi i capelli, tanto meno di cantare per professione. La segue, attraverso il materiale di repertorio privatissimo, amicale, mentre scopre il suo dono e il piacere di cantare per un pubblico raccolto, a cui raccontare le proprie esperienze in musica. Quel piacere resterà sempre tale ma diverrà una chimera, un sogno impossibile, man mano che le platee dei suoi concerti si allargano a dismisura, le copie vendute non si contano più, la macchina della finanza gira ad alti livelli e pretende il prezzo del carburante.
