In 2015, 15 years after the enormous catastrophe that killed half of the world population, another crisis has come - the unidentified invaders called "Angels" begin to attack human-kind. Any of their weapons are useless against the so-called "Absolute Terror Field". But now human-kind had created an exception;the ultimate all-purpose humanoid weapon "Evangelion". To operate this exception needs the minds of "Children", 14-year-old juveniles. Shinji Ikari, the only son of the commander-in-chief of the team that administered Evangelion, is selected as the third of the "Children"...!
When the Angels start attacking the planet Earth in the year 2015, only a handful of 14-year-old EVA pilots are able to stop them. Young Shinji Ikari suddenly finds himself forced to pilot EVA-01, a giant organic mecha, designed and constructed by NERV, that is the only thing that can stop the Angels.
First, I want to give everybody an urgent advice: WATCH THIS!
Although it starts off innocently enough (?) and seems to be just another mecha series, we soon learn a lot about Shinji and his relation to his father and get a little taste of where this is going. With every minute of watching the story develops more and more towards a psychological drama/trauma. You are shown more and more of the characters' psyches and you just start to understand that there's something special going on...
Besides from being animated great (almost OVA-quality, I would say) and containing a great soundtrack (I will always sing this cool title song though it's Japanese! ;-) ), the real deal about this is simply the look behind the characters. Normally, you only see their actions or a little of their thoughts (what would be things like: "Oh. I'm in danger. I have to defeat this villain."), but you see EVERYTHING. At least in the main character Shinji. You will not only understand what he does, but also exactly why he does. And that's the flair about EVANGELION: you will get to feel what's going on, not only see it. Each and every character will been seen in different eyes after each episode than at its beginning. They are developing - or to say it better: reavealing. As the story develops, the characters' secrets are revealed and one gets to know the whys and hows of what they did. I really like this, because (as the main reason) it surprises me again and again with those great characters.
So watch it and get to like it. And if you don't Asuka will strike her "ANTA BAKA!" on you!
This is absolutely one of the best anime series that you can see. When i saw episode i really thought that it would be just another save-the-world series. But during watching the second episode, i realized that i was wrong. The character Shinji began showing something that really resembled character depth. After watching another couple of episodes i realized that i was watching one of the best anime (or other series and films) that you possibly can watch: the characters kept on showing new depths in character. When i finally had seen the whole series and the movies i kept on thinking about the characters and how they evolved. And i wanted to see it again just to get the feeling of getting to know them better again. In all i really think this is a crowning achievement for the whole crew who made this series possible. I really hope that they think about making a sequel. The only thing i have to say is this: If you haven't seen it you really ought to and if you already seen you really ought to watch it again.
