Other handheld jigs, like the Wolfcraft Dowelmaster, require manual holding against the boards. Next, use a drill with a depth stop and adjust the drilling depth for board "A." The depth stop uses a collar for drilling holes of uniform depth. For the drilling depth, use half of the dowel length plus 1/16 inch.

I already reviewed my Wolfcraft Dowel Quick Doweling Jig (4641), a mostly-plastic affair that can be used to drill holes for dowels on both boards in a joint. With a little patience (and some careful study of the rather cryptic instructions) you can build a sturdy joint that will withstand years of use. That's not my only doweling jig,
Drilling the Edge. Remove the fence and flip the Jig over. The 4 centering pins can be used in 3 configurations, based on the dowel size you're using and the thickness of the board. Used properly, your hole is guaranteed to be centered.
