After the murder of his family, Marine veteran Frank Castle became a vigilante known as "The Punisher" with only one goal in mind, to avenge them.
I know "Stranger Things" is now Netflix's flagship series, but I honestly think "The Punisher" is a better show for adult audiences. The only real drawback is that it was graphically violent so I wouldn't recommend it for younger viewers.
Netflix's "The Punisher" has the unique distinction of being far superior to the source material it came from. The comic book is pretty much brainless revenge porn for angry teenage boys. The series Netflix released is absolutely amazing. If I were to make a comparison I'd say that it was like the writers of "Homeland" decided to remake "Rambo: First Blood" set in the modern era. This was the first time Frank Castle was every really portrayed in a serious way and Jon Bernthal gave a magnificent performance. In fact the entire cast was great and for the most part pretty well known.
The series tells the story of a group of Marines who were ordered to do horrific things in Afghanistan by a corrupt leader. Now they're back in the USA trying to live with what happened while they were at war and trying to survive the cover up attempt.
Aside from great story telling and character development, one of the things that made this series great was that unlike other Marvel series, this series made a noticeable attempt to stand alone from the Marvel universe. Other than Karen Page, the reporter who Frank Castle met in Daredevil season two, there was no other Marvel tie in. This was not a show about super heroes or guys in costumes. There was a concerted effort to make this series stand on its own and be relevant to all audiences, comic fans or not.
I read a review recently from a once reputable news source that stated that with the recent events in Las Vegas, "The Punisher" was 'Too soon'. I find that mentality to be utterly ridiculous. The logic seems to me to be equal to saying that "Saving Private Ryan" should never have been made for fear of offending widows of WWII. This series deals with very relevant topics such as domestic terrorism and gun control in a way that actually did a pretty good job of representing both sides of the debate. To say Netflix shouldn't have released the series now is in my view being anti-free speech so I'm glad Netflix did the right thing. I just hope they can follow it up with an equally good season two which is going to be hard to do.
Not only being a Jon Bernthal fan (from His role in Daredevil, apart from this i was a childhood fan of THE PUNISHER. The series is truly amazing, there was not a single moment I could even go, do some work. Believe me I sat full 13 hours just watching this. Mind Blowing story line and superb action scenes.You can watch this with friends or your family, but just watch this series. I bet, the moment you finish the series you'd definitely go buy a Punisher T-shirt.
